Photos by Pete McBride @pedromcbride | Closing Time: The aging coal-fired Navajo Power Generating Station is expected to close in days, due to its inability to compete with cheaper alternative energy sources. When these desert stacks stop billowing, it will signal an economic transition for both the Navajo and Hopi tribes, which have relied on this plant for jobs and revenue for years. The closure will also open the door for the tribes to explore other energy sources like wind and solar, cutting their decades-long tie to coal. Additional economic engine proposals—some progressive, and others like damming Grand Canyon tributaries—have already come forth. Such decisions on these expansive, native lands that border the Grand Canyon will define the future of this “painted desert” region and its resources. #energy #coal #water #navajo #hopi

Photo by Pete McBride @pedromcbride | Seeing Stripes: Botswana’s national animal, the zebra, migrates across the country twice a year. During the migrations, zebras and other wildlife started competing with cattle for limited water sources after the Boteti River dried up. In 2009 high rainfall restored the river’s flow for the first time in 20 years, bringing much-needed relief to the area’s migratory animals. Botswana is one of 17 countries under extremely high water stress, like many regions facing imminent global water shortage. For more on conservation of wildlife and water, follow @pedromcbride.

Photo by Nichole Sobecki @nicholesobecki | I met Lowelu Krion on the shores of Lake Turkana, as she waited for her father and brothers to return from retrieving their fishing nets. Sitting together, her mother told me of their life beside the jade sea, and the home it had been for her mother and others, generations back. The harsh terrain surrounding the blue-green waters here ensured that this was the last great African lake mapped by Europeans, and it remains one of East Africa’s most remote regions. The world’s largest permanent desert lake, Turkana has existed for some four million years, but Lowelu’s mother was concerned with the future, not the past. A dam up north and nearby plantations are squeezing the lake and those who survive by fishing from its shores. Many worry its days are numbered. Uncertainty looms for Lowelu and her family, but in the determination of her gaze I felt a small but fierce glimpse of hope.

Photo by Pete McBride @pedromcbride | Each year 13 billion gallons of snowmelt water—supplying 7 percent of Denver’s needs—flows into or around the treatment ponds above the Blue and Eagle River tributaries (for the Colorado River) and the Arkansas River Valley. The Climax open-pit mine near Leadville, Colorado, extracts molybdenum and has released “spikes” of molybdenum at levels up to 14 times higher than the state limit into the watershed. Climax has requested multiple extensions for the temporary lifting of those health limits, and water-quality scientists hope the mine will use the extension time to stop the molybdenum pollution spikes. The constant push and pull serves as a reminder of the fragile balance between mineral extraction and clean water in the Colorado River Basin. To see more on freshwater, follow @pedromcbride.

Photo by Pete McBride @pedromcbride | I've been lucky to see a lot on our shared blue planet, which consistently amazes me. Hopefully we can pass it forward to the next generation better than we found it. We have a ways to go. The Colorado River estuary, once the largest in North America, is now a cracked and depleted dry delta due to our orchestra of thirst. It illustrates how we often ask too much of our fragile home. To see more of our shared wild places, follow @pedromcbride.

Photo by @amivitale | Children carry water for their teacher in Zigberi, a remote part of Burkina Faso in the desert region near the Mali border. The village had no school; after years of waiting, the parents, desperate to get an education for their children, decided to build their own. Female education in Burkina Faso and West Africa is particularly difficult, given the demands placed on the women and girls in society to do all the household work, such as pounding the millet, preparing food, and getting wood and water, which is sparse and often kilometers away. Today is World Water Day: billions worldwide still do not have access to clean water. Women and girls spend 200 million collective hours daily seeking and hauling water for their communities, a task that steals their time and potential. Learn more, including how you can help, by following @amivitale and looking for organizations, locally and globally, making clean water a reality for everyone.

A satellite image offers a view of the Suwannee River in Georgia that’s known as a “blackwater river” because of its dark-brown waters laden with organic material. Unlike other blackwater rivers, it maintains its inky color along its entire 250-mile journey to the sea.

When the river finally meets the Gulf of Mexico along Florida’s Big Bend—that portion of coast where the state’s panhandle curves to meet its peninsula—its dark waters act like a tracer, revealing whereby the river water mixes with the sea.

To understand the color of the Suwannee River, you have to start at its source. In Georgia’s boggy Okefenokee Swamp, the peat deposits are so extensive that the ground quivers with every step.

It is in this swamp that the nascent Suwannee River first encounters large amounts of decaying vegetation. As these leaves, branches, and bark decay, the tannins that once protected the vegetation dissolve into a substance that dyes the river a brown so dark that it borders on black. The amount of dark dissolved organic matter, or humic substances, in the Suwannee River is nearly ten times higher than other streams around the world.

Our satellite view from the vantage point of space helps us increase our understanding of our home planet, improve lives, and safeguard our future.

Video by @gabrielegalimbertiphoto | Navigating the waterways of Makoko waterfront community in Lagos, Nigeria. Makoko’s nickname is the "Venice of Africa.” It is a large, low-income community with more than 50 percent of its population on water. The houses on water are supported by wooden stilts, driven deep into the waterbed. Each house hosts between six and 10 people. The principal economic activities of Makoko are salt making, sand dredging, and fishing. Thanks Benedicte Kurzen for bringing me there! #nigeria #makoko #lagos #africa #water #veniceofafrica
