As is the case with most male dairy calves, Falco was taken from his mother shortly after birth, denying him the immunity-boosting colostrum he needed for a healthy start in life. As a result, he became desperately ill. In just 10 days, Falco’s weight dropped from 60 pounds to 49 and his body-condition score, which indicates an animal’s size, was at the lowest value: 1 out of 9. To make matters worse, he had leg infections that required multiple surgeries to repair; maggots inside his umbilical cord, ear, and body cavity, which also caused hair loss on his backside; and a terrible bout of crypto. When we rescued Falco on this day in 2017, we rushed him to the Nemo Farm Animal Hospital at Cornell University to receive treatment. After a month, he was healthy enough to come home to our Watkins Glen shelter, where he eventually made a full recovery. Falco has been at @farmsanctuary for the last two years, receiving the care he needs and loving life with his human and bovine friends. A beloved baby marine mammal in Thailand has died after consuming plastic and experiencing shock, Thai officials said Saturday. The young dugong, a relative of the manatee, was named Marium after marine biologists discovered her orphaned and lost in April in southern Thailand, the Associated Press reported. Soon, she captured hearts around the world as videos of her nuzzling up against caretakers circulated the Internet. Veterinarians found pieces of plastic blocking the young mammal’s intestines and said that Marium died of shock. Her intestines became inflamed, which caused gas in her digestive tract, an infection in her blood and pus in her lungs. The infection spread, causing shock, officials said in the announcement. Farm Sanctuary

It’s a little-known fact that thousands of farm animals can be found in major cities, including New York. Live markets that sell chickens, turkeys, ducks, geese, goats, sheep, pigs, and cattle are inconspicuously tucked in between auto shops, hardware stores, and bakeries — and inside them are living beings. One of those living beings was Westley, who was rescued from slaughter by a woman in Queens who overheard a conversation between two men who were talking about slaughtering him. Fortunately, she was able to convince them to turn Westley over to her instead. Suddenly, she had a calf — so she brought him home to her row house in Queens, where she began the process of finding him a forever home. Once in the woman's apartment, a very hungry Westley (calves are always hungry) began to moo. If you have ever heard a calf moo, it is pretty loud for such a little bovine, and in the city (even with all the other noises), Westley was heard. And because he was keeping the neighbors up at night with his loud moos, a neighbor called our friends at the Animal Care Centers of NYC (ACC), who reached out to us. Three years later, this fuzz-a-ma-tuzz (technical term) is living it up in our main herd, with his city mouse days long behind him. Happy Rescue-versary, Westley. 💚 . . . . . #friendsnotfood #eatplants #farmsanctuarylife #farmsanctuary #animalsanctuary #thepowerofsanctuary #rescueanimals #rescue #animalrescue #rescued #loveanimals #animallover #animaladdict #bekindtoanimals #animalsofinstagram #animalsarefriends #instaanimals #thefarmsanctuary #ilovefarmsanctuary #someonenotsomething #cowsofinstagram #cows #cow #cowstagram #animals #calf #babyanimals

David Bowie and Rod Stewart roosters came into our lives 5 years ago this week after being anonymously dumped at the front gates of our Southern California Shelter. These studs are Polish crested roosters, a breed known for their impressive crown of feathers. They may be ruggedly handsome, but their gorgeous ‘dos require serious maintenance, and we routinely trim back the long “bangs” that would otherwise cover their eyes. After all, what’s the point of performing their signature sexy dances for their flock of adoring chickens if they can’t see their ladies swoon? RESCUED: This handsome fella is Patch. Patch spent his life on a historical farm more than three centuries old, restored to recreate how life used to be. For years, he worked as a breeding ram, helping to populate the farm's sheep flock: Visitors paid to see the cute lambs he sired, which helped support the farm and the animals’ care. Once Patch aged out of production, though, his future became uncertain; the farm didn't think they could accommodate his growing needs without the money he helped bring in. They hoped to find a new home for Patch; otherwise, they felt they had no choice but to sell him at auction for slaughter. Farm Sanctuary is excited to offer this big-horned beauty a grand "retirement” at our New York shelter, where he can live the rest of his life on his own terms. 💚 . . . . . #friendsnotfood, #eatplants, #farmsanctuarylife, #farmsanctuary #thepowerofsanctuary #rescueanimals #rescue #animalrescue #rescued #iloveanimals #animallovers #animaladdicts #loveanimals #animallover #animaladdict #bekindtoanimals #animalsofinstagram #animalsarefriends #instaanimals #thefarmsanctuary #ilovefarmsanctuary #someonenotsomething #sheep #sheep🐑 #cuteanimals #animals

Farm Sanctuary

In 2013, we received a call about two calves who had been discovered left in stalls at a recently purchased Amish dairy farm. The new owners were also new to the industry and thought the idea of running a small dairy would be idyllic. They purchased the property — cows and all. What they discovered in some of the back pens, however, wasn't expected. The farm was horrific, and the new owners found stalls in the back of the barn where the previous owners had taken some of the unwanted calves — just a few they had been raising for meat. Two bull calves were found tied with rope to the walls of their individual stalls. Both calves were barely able to lie down or even stretch their legs. And although each had endured the same ordeal, the two calves had never met each other, because neither had ever left their stalls. For their entire lives, Ted and Leo had suffered alone. Now, at Farm Sanctuary, these two "brothers from another mother" are valued as friends, not food. The previously sick and emaciated calves are now strong, vibrant steers who are valued members of our main herd. When walking around our SoCal sanctuary, you might sometimes have the feeling you are being watched ... And you are. Yoda is definitely watching you. He takes his job as protector of the sheep barn very seriously, and woe to anyone who tries to harm his flock! Yoda is Farm Sanctuary's first (and only) llama. We rescued him in 2013 from a woman who was losing her house, and in her desperation to rehome Yoda, had put him up on Craigslist for free. Recognizing the uniqueness of the ad and the potential peril for said llama, a Farm Sanctuary volunteer leapt into action, contacting the poster and then us. Yoda’s guardian attested that he was friendly with people and other animals and loved carrots—so we decided he would be a good fit for our SoCal sanctuary. And so it was that we bravely (and a tad naively) agreed to embark upon our first llama rescue. After a couple of hours, a wild chase around an unfenced property, an improvised pulley system, and a staff person and two volunteers drenched in llama spit mixed with twenty pounds of spit-out carrot parts, Yoda was safely loaded onto the trailer. Six years later, Yoda still awes, amazes, enchants, and puzzles us every day with his hilarious antics and sometimes alien demeanor. Swipe ➡️to see how he can even make something as simple as eating a strawberry into a magical moment. 🍓💚 🎥1: @doriangee 🎥2: @ladyyybean . . . . . #yoda #llama #friendsnotfood #eatplants #farmsanctuarylife #farmsanctuary #thepowerofsanctuary #rescueanimals #rescue #animalrescue #rescued #iloveanimals #animallovers #animaladdicts #loveanimals #animallover #animaladdict #bekindtoanimals #animalsofinstagram #animalsarefriends #instaanimals #thefarmsanctuary #ilovefarmsanctuary #someonenotsomething

Cows love their children and want to care for them, just like all mothers. And while it might seem like a no-brainer that taking a baby away from any mother would cause distress, we nonetheless do it daily on dairies across the country. Gary was one of those babies. At just hours old, he was taken from his mother. He wasn't allowed to spend time with her, much less nurse from her or receive her affection. Gary has now been at our New York sanctuary for three years, and has made close bonds with his human caregivers and the other bovines in our main herd — but we wish that he could have his mother, too — to be allowed to live a life that should have been his birthright. Wherever she escaped from, she likely would have faced a bleak fate had she remained there; the livestock tag in her ear indicated that she was viewed and treated as a commodity, rather than as an individual. Here, she's a valued member of our California flock. 💚

Ari was born at a “cull sale.” Dairy cows, who produce milk only when they have been impregnated, are subjected to a relentless cycle of gestation, birth, and insemination until their bodies are worn out. At four or five years old, these “spent” cows are brought to auction and sold for cheap beef. Often, this beef is used to make fast food hamburgers, as it is the only possible use for these poor mothers’ spent bodies. When Ari’s mother gave birth in a sale house, workers promptly drove her to the auction floor before she even had a chance to clean her newborn. Ari, only minutes old, was left on the floor to die. Luckily, a horse rescue was there monitoring conditions of horses sent to be sold for meat. A member of their party passed the empty pen and saw what she thought was a jacket. She went to pick it up. But it wasn’t a jacket; it was Ari. Thanks to the compassion of this woman, we rushed Ari to Cornell University Hospital for Animals to receive vital care, then brought him home to our New York Shelter. Sick and feeble, Ari required constant monitoring at first. As his caregivers watched over him and provided round-the-clock bottle feedings, they were heartened to see his small acts of determination — trying his best at meals, mustering a moo, and attempting a playful dash on his unsteady legs. With lots of heart and lots of help, Ari made it out of the woods and began to thrive. Now, six years later, Ari is a strong and active (and huge!) member of our main herd. He has a best bovine bud named Nik. He’s funny, rambunctious, and full of life. He reminds us every day that non-human animals are here with us, not for us. Happy Rescue-versary, Ari! Leo (brown) has been the bovine baby of our Southern California sanctuary since his rescue last November. When we rescued Dixon (black-and-white) in May, we wondered how Leo might react to a new kid on his turf. Leo and Dixon both came from the dairy industry, where male calves can't make profit, and are therefore seen as disposable. More specifically, both boys were found on Craigslist, where their previous "owners" were trying to get rid of their surplus males for free or cheap. While Leo and Dixon don't necessarily know that they share a history, they were clearly able to sense a kindred spirit in one another: these two have become close friends, and can be seen playing and chasing each other around our Acton sanctuary. . . . . . #friendsnotfood #eatplants #farmsanctuarylife #farmsanctuary #animalsanctuary #thepowerofsanctuary #rescueanimals #rescue #animalrescue #rescued #loveanimals #animallover #animaladdict #bekindtoanimals #animalsofinstagram #animalsarefriends #instaanimals #thefarmsanctuary #ilovefarmsanctuary #someonenotsomething #cowsofinstagram #cows #cow #cowstagram #animals #calf #babyanimals

In what is truly a first for Farm Sanctuary, we are excited to announce that we're facilitating the rescue and placement of a water buffalo! Seymour was born on a water buffalo dairy. While certainly not as common in the US as domestic cattle, water buffalo are also bred for their meat and their milk, which is used to make products like Buffalo mozzarella. Unfortunately, in any dairy industry, most males are unwanted, since they can't produce milk (and therefore, can't produce profit). Luckily, Seymour was taken in as a companion animal by someone who viewed him as someone, not something. When his guardian could no longer provide Seymour quality care, he reached out to see if we could help. When we posted about Seymour on our Farm Animal Adoption Network page on Facebook, he understandably attracted a lot of attention (how could he not with those amazing horns?!), and we were able to find a perfect forever home for him at a sanctuary in Florida. Since we don't want to risk transporting him in the summer heat, Seymour's going to be sticking around with us until late September. Look forward to more updates on this charmer in the coming weeks! . . . . . #friendsnotfood #eatplants #farmsanctuarylife #farmsanctuary #animalsanctuary #thepowerofsanctuary #rescueanimals #rescue #animalrescue #rescued #loveanimals #animallover #animaladdict #bekindtoanimals #animalsofinstagram #animalsarefriends #instaanimals #thefarmsanctuary #ilovefarmsanctuary #someonenotsomething #animals #buffalo #waterbuffalo #waterbuffaloes

Eight years ago this week, we stood at the door of a dank and fetid barn as the flashlights of SPCA agents played over the faces of five calves who had escaped a brutal fate. They were unfed and underweight. Their milk replacer was full of mold. Their pneumonia was severe, and they were dehydrated. Just a few days earlier, eleven calves had been purchased by a man looking to raise them for cheap beef. Males born to dairy cows are useless to milk producers and are often sold at livestock auctions for a few dollars each when they are only days old. Their new “owner” hadn’t realized that the calves had contracted pneumonia and their health was dwindling. To properly treat all eleven calves would have cost approximately $20. Instead, the purchaser decided to shoot the young bulls. By the time authorities intervened, he had already killed six. The man was arrested, but not for animal cruelty. He had violated his probation by discharging a firearm. Now, eight years later, three of the survivors (Arnold, Milbank, and Orlando) are still living large at our Watkins Glen Sanctuary. Sadly, we lost Conrad to heart failure in 2017, and Tweed this year after a long battle with cancer. While these boys had a sad beginning, disregarded by the dairy industry and neglected by an owner who thought of them as commodities, they are now able to live the rest of their lives out in peace at our NY sanctuary. Let's talk about hay! To date in 2019, we’ve received 4,000 small hay bales and 514 large hay bales at our Watkins Glen shelter, for a combined weight of 300 tons -- and that's just the first cutting hay, meaning we will be bringing in even more to get us through winter! The small hay bales weigh about 40-50lbs per bale, and account for 100 tons of the total. Each one of these 4,000 bales is individually picked up and handled by members of our staff at least four times: once when they are unloaded from the truck, once when testing for heat and moisture, once when they are stored in the barn, and finally when the bales are brought out to feed the animals. If you're curious about what 100 tons looks like, it's the equivalent of a small blue whale 🐋. Or 100 of our biggest steers 🐄. Or 10 tyrannosaurus rex. 🦖 We salute the superheroes of the Farm Sanctuary staff for their commitment to lifting hundreds of tons of hay so that our residents like Finn here can always have plenty of nutritious food available, even when it's too cold to go outside and graze! . . . . . #friendsnotfood #eatplants #farmsanctuarylife #farmsanctuary #animalsanctuary #thepowerofsanctuary #rescueanimals #rescue #animalrescue #rescued #loveanimals #animallover #animaladdict #bekindtoanimals #animalsofinstagram #animalsarefriends #instaanimals #thefarmsanctuary #ilovefarmsanctuary #someonenotsomething #cowsofinstagram #cows #cow #cowstagram #animals

In January, we introduced you to Peggy, a rescued dairy cow born with severe leg disabilities that only allowed her to "walk" by dragging herself forward on her knees. As soon as we learned about Peggy, we asked our vets at Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine if they could help, and we are so thrilled to report that after months of surgeries and physical therapy, this fighter is now WALKING on her own! When we committed to Peggy's care, there was no way of knowing what the future would hold. These kinds of surgeries are quite risky — especially for animals as large as Peggy — and are typically performed only as a last resort. Seeing her amazing progress and her resilience, determination, and sheer love of life through this process has been truly inspiring. SWIPE LEFT to see Peggy before her surgeries. Enjoy this throwback video of their piglet days and join us in wishing them a very happy 7th birthday! . . . . . #pigs #pig #pigsofinstagram #piggy #pigstagram #cuddles #cuddleswithbae #friendsnotfood #eatplants #farmsanctuarylife, #farmsanctuary #thepowerofsanctuary #rescueanimals #rescue #animalrescue #rescued #iloveanimals #animallovers #animaladdicts #loveanimals #animallover #animaladdict #bekindtoanimals #animalsofinstagram #animalsarefriends #instaanimals #thefarmsanctuary #ilovefarmsanctuary #someonenotsomething #animals

Farm Sanctuary

We're thrilled to have vegan athlete and activist @domzthompson of @eatwhatelephantseat at the New York sanctuary! Dom is speaking today at our annual Hoedown event, where hundreds of advocates, academics, environmentalists, and entrepreneurs gather at our New York sanctuary for a weekend of inspiring talks, great food, and quality time with our rescued residents. Dom is kicking off the program this morning with a talk on "Redefining Masculinity and the Human Experience." Follow our story for coverage of all of the presentations and the rest of the Hoedown experience! 💚 . . . . #Hoedown2019 #veganmen #veganguy #Vegan #vegansofig #plantbased #veganlife #govegan #vegansofinstagram #veganism #plantpower #friendsnotfood #eatplants #farmsanctuarylife #farmsanctuary #animalsanctuary #rescueanimals #rescue #animalrescue #animallover #animaladdict #bekindtoanimals #animalsofinstagram #animalsarefriends #someonenotsomething #cowsofinstagram #cows #cow #cowstagram

Farm Sanctuary

Born with a terminal heart condition, Pippi (black and white) used to have trouble walking without gasping for air. And because of his severe leg issues, Forrest (black) came to us unable to stand or walk properly. Look at them now! We couldn’t have asked for a better time to welcome Forrest into the Farm Sanctuary family. Pippi's best friend Poppy — another calf with special needs — is currently with our vets at Cornell and Pippi had been mooing and crying for her missing friend, which was heartbreaking to hear. When Forrest arrived, he took to “big sister” Pippi right away and found the comfort he craved after having lost his mother when he was just days old. And Pippi found another playmate to keep her company. She no longer cries at night, and loves taking charge of her new little herd. Together, they are helping each other heal. 💚 . . . . . #friendsnotfood #eatplants #farmsanctuarylife #farmsanctuary #animalsanctuary #thepowerofsanctuary #rescueanimals #rescue #animalrescue #rescued #loveanimals #animallover #animaladdict #bekindtoanimals #animalsofinstagram #animalsarefriends #instaanimals #thefarmsanctuary #ilovefarmsanctuary #someonenotsomething #cowsofinstagram #cows #cow #cowstagram #calf #babyanimals #animals
