Photo by Cory Richards @coryrichards | A commitment to climbing mountains means a commitment to embracing failure. On the quest to summit the highest peak in Myanmar, the expedition team and I were pushed almost beyond our limits, brought down to nothing. As a team we collectively made the decision to turn back after a 40+-day attempt. It may be seen as a failure by traditional standards, but the best lessons are sometimes learned when your acute discernment is put to the test. #NationalMountainClimbingDay #mountains #climbing #adventure #travel

Photo by Pete McBride @pedromcbride | The wake of nature’s work: The humbling power of an avalanche leaves an old aspen forest brushed over and rooted like toothpicks. After roughly two decades of drought in the Colorado River Basin, the record snowpack was welcome, but it didn’t depart quietly. This past winter saw one of the most extreme avalanche cycles in Colorado's history, thanks to an unsteady snowpack followed by heavy storms. Photos by @coryrichards | Yesterday marked the 8th anniversary of the first winter ascent of Gasherbrum II (8,035 meters), the world's 13th highest mountain. On February 4, 2011, I became the first and only American to climb an 8,000-meter peak in winter. The selfie I took after surviving a class IV avalanche on the descent (first image in carousel) would later become one of the covers for Nat Geo’s 125th anniversary issue. NASA

Who has the range? Astronauts, that’s who! In this view, astronauts captured the cloud-covered Pacific coast of the South American nation of Chile in contrast with the Andes Mountain range and cloud formations extending over Argentina. Each day, the International Space Station (@ISS) orbits our home planet as the humans living and working aboard our orbiting labporatory conduct important science and research. Their work will not only benefit life here on Earth, but will help us venture deeper into space than ever before. Photo by @lucalocatelliphoto | The Fantiscritti marble basin in Carrara, Italy. The white marble excavation sites of Carrara are located within the imposing and ecologically-rich Apuan Alps. Millions of years of organic sediments congealed to create this precious stone, forging the core of these severe mountains running along the Italian sea. The white stone of Carrara is reckoned since Roman times as the finest marble. Ancient excavation techniques preserved these mountains for centuries, but the acceleration that new extraction technology offers has violently increased the destruction—here in the last thirty years, more marble has been removed than during the past two millennia. . The Moosham Castle in Unternberg in the Lungau is owned by the Wilczek family and houses a publicly accessible museum. Around the middle of the eighteenth century, a bailiff named Anton lived in the castle of Moosham. He was known to the people under the name of "Schorgen-Toni" and, because of his cruelty, a man ill-known in the whole of Lungau, he oppressed the people, tortured the prisoners who sat in the dungeons at Moosham in the most appalling manner and especially accused the poachers Tough, yes, he even maltreated his parents and made them feel his rudeness, but despite his many misdeeds, he never received the just punishment, so people claimed that he had dedicated his soul to the devil, who was protecting him finally had struck his hour, photo from Sep 19 on our backway from CROATIA . . #moosham #Unternberg #lungern #salzburgaustria #salzburgerland #salzburgo #Salzburg #österreich #österreich🇦🇹 #österreichurlaub #burg #schloß #schloss #castle #castle🏰 #europa #europe #europetravels #europetravel #berge #mountains #travelpowersupport #komm_mit_mir #sehenswürdigkeit #sehenswürdigkeiten #austria #austria🇦🇹 #worldnomads #traveldestinations_ig #lovelyplanet
