Making the rounds to (1) get stamps in my @cbusaletrail passport, and (2) doing more business development for my safety consulting business, I stopped into @illmanneredbeer, brewery 61 on the way to 100 in 2019. While I was here I grabbed a Cow Quake Milkshake IPA with Pink Quava. Hazy gold in color with a light fruity aroma. Creamy a tropical on the tongue with prominent guava notes, as would be expected. A big day of brewery hopping and drinking with my bro @thedrunkenthumb ensues. Stop 1 is also number 62 on my way to 100 breweries in 2019. Up first is Coffee Shop Jazz, a 5.8% coffee stout. Dark and roasty, with a creamy sweetness and distinct coffee flavor. Very tasty! 3.75/5 Second is the Island Style Tropical Red Ale. More of a fruity amber than a red, but very refreshing and sweet, almost like the milk from a bowl of Fruity Pebbles. 3.25/5 Third is the Mimosa Blood Orange and Pear Lager. Light and clear, this 5% ABV beer drinks more like a sweet cider than a beer. Refreshing nonetheless. 3.5/5 Last in this flight is the Saphire Haze, a 6.7% ABV, 23 ibu hazy IPA. Next stop with @thedrunkenthumb on our Cincinnati Brewery Tour 2019 is brewery number 63 on the way to 100 in 2019, @marchfirstbrew. First beer in the flight is the Tropical Blonde with Mango and Guava. Tastes exactly like the name says it should - sweet and fruity, but still a beer. Great pool beer. 3.25/5 Second is the Single Hop Series: Calypso IPA. A 6% ABV, 25 IBU beer. Light, clean, and clear, this is a very easy-drinking, fruity IPA. 3/5 Third is the Tangerine IPA. Big citrus tangerine notes up front, with a bitter, orange peel finish for balance. 3/5 Last in the flight is the Blue Ash Double IPA. More Saturday beer fun. This Hazy Pale Ale packs a whole grove’s worth of lemon-forward hoppy zeal. It's not brewed with actual lemons but with hop varieties—Lemondrop, Loral, Citra, and Centennial—that deliver a perceived lemony-citrus punch. Third new beer of this beautiful Saturday evening is another @platformbeerco collaboration, this time with @thebutcherandthebrewer. This is the second of three IPAs brewed in celebration of Platform's 5 year anniversary. This traditional West Coast IPA is brewed with Simcoe Cryo and Centennial. Last of the three collaboration IPAs brewed for the @platformbeerco 5 year anniversary. Brewed with Columbus' @landgrantbrewing, this New England style brut IPA is a combination that works really well. One of the highlights of this year's @dublinirishfest was today's Premium Whiskey Tasting. @redbreastirishwhiskey 21 Year Old, 12 Year Old Cask Strength, and Lustau Edition were all good, along with the @midletonveryrare Barry Crockett Legacy. I have to say that the 2017 Vintage Release was my favorite. After a little break I'll back on my journey to 100 breweries in 2019. Stop number 69 is @revisionbrewing in Reno, NV. I expected really good beer based on research I did, and I was not disappointed. I started with a flight of New England/Hazy IPAs. Up first was Scrog Grog, a 6.5% hazy, fruity NEIPA. Brewed with Citra, Mosaic and Galaxy hops, and a dollop of milk sugar. Pillowy soft mouthfeel with a nice mango/pineapple sweetness. 4.25/5 Second was the Disco Ninja, a light yellow, hazy juice-bomb. This #collaberation with @shoetreebrewing proves what we all know - ninjas are bad-asses! Brewed with Citra, Galaxy, Mosaic and Amarillo hops, this beer smacks you in the tongue with a tangerine and sugared lemon citrus punch. 4/4 Third was the Smoke and Mirrors. Citra, Mosaic, and Amarillo hops form a power trio of tastiness in this 8% double NE IPA, which delivers a double dose of goodness. Mango sweetness that fades into Pineapple goodness that slowly melts away. 4.25/5 Fourth beer in my flight was the Pour Decisions NE Style IPA. Despite the name, this 11% triple NEIPA, brewed with Mosaic, Vic Secret, and Amarillo was a good decision. Sweet, smooth and strong, any booziness is well covered by the fruity sweetness, almost like a well-balanced screwdriver. Brewery number 70 on the way to 100 in 2019 is @leaddogbrewing - Tasting & Production, in Sparks, NV. This is a new location in many of the apps, so you may need to search for it. Beer number 1 of the flight is the Saturday's R 4 The Brews Hazy IPA. Deceptively strong at 7.5%, this hazy, citrusy IPA drinks really easily... Dangerously so. 3.5/5 Second beer is the Lead Dog DIPA, a 7.2% double IPA. A more traditional, West Coast DIPA, this clear and dank brew is a touch fruity. 3.25/5 Third beer of the flight is the Oranges are Orange Milkshake DIPA. Vanilla on the nose with a huge, orangey punch in the mouth. Soft mouthfeel with a sweet vanilla finish. 4.25/5 Last up is the Imperial Peanut Butter Stout. Huge at 10.2% with a wonderful peanut butter taste. Last stop of the night is @greatbasinbrewing, number 71 on the way to 100 breweries in 2019. Needed some food in addition to the beer. Flight of six this time. Beer number 1 was the Cervesa Chilebeso, a light, Mexican lager with distinct jalapeno pepper notes. Three time gold medalist in the Herb & Spice Beer category at the Great American Beer Festival®(1994, 1997, and 1999. Crisp and clean malt profile that is followed by a satisfying kiss of fresh Jalapeño peppers. A nice example of the style. 3.5/5 Beer number 2 is the Ichthyosaur IPA. Named for Nevada's state fossil, Ichthyosaur "Icky" IPA is a traditional American IPA featuring more malt balance than the West Coast IPA. Hop-forward without being aggressive, it features notes of lime and spruce, balanced by hints of caramel malt sweetness. A little weaker than I'd like, but very drinkable, especially by the beer novice. 2.75/5 Third of six is the Tectonic Event IPA. A West Coast-style IPA featuring a clean malt profile balanced by Columbus, Chinook, Citra, Centennial and Amarillo hops. Clean, clear, and dangerously crushable at 8.9%. 3.5/5 Fourth is a guest beer - @mammothbrewing Epic IPA. A light, clean, traditional IPA at 6.5%. Easy drinking, and a throw back to the IPAs of the early 90s. 3.25/5 Fifth is the Hazyosaur NE IPA. Fruity and juicy, this pleasant beer has blend of fruit/floral hops added late with oats and wheat to compliment the malt, giving this hazy IPA a low bitterness and high aromatics. Last up is the Nitro Outlaw Milk Stout. Distinct coffee-like character with a silky texture. Last full day in Reno before heading home on Thursday, and was able to stop into brewery number 72 on the way to 100 in 2019, @pigeonheadbrewery. Very cool little spot. First beer of the flight was the Swing Shift, a 5.4% NEIPA. Light, slightly hazy and fruity. Very pleasant and easy drinking. 3.25/5 Up next is the Silver Sage Pale Ale, a 4.8% pale ale that's finished with white sage leaves added during the dry hop with Citra. The sage is present without overpowering anything, giving the beer a herbaceous taste. Light and clean. 3/5 Third is the Pineapple/Basil India Pale Lager. Big, fruity pineapple sweetness on the nose and initial palate. The basil herbiness creates an interesting but bi not unpleasant finish. 3.75/5 Fourth beer in the flight is the Jalapeno/Habanero India Pale Lager. This 6% IPL smells like fresh jalapenos, and when you drink it, the sweetness of the base lager swiftly shifts to punch you in the mouth with spicy heat. If you don't like hot things you won't like this. Fortunately I enjoy spicy beers, so I'm really digging this! 3.75/5 Next is the Red Rye Lager. Clear in color with caramel/toffee notes that are well balanced with spicy notes from the rye. A very approachable and tasty beer. 3.75/5 Last beer is the Black Lager with Turkish Coffee. This is a great beer! Being a lager, it's lighter than most coffee porters or stouts. My Reno exploration continues. Up next is @imbibreno, brewery number 73 on my way to 100 in 2019. I decided to start outside of my flavor comfort zone with a fruited sour, the Candy Cigarettes-Mango Peach. It's described as "Mango-Peach berliner-weisse back-sweetened with lactose and vanilla. A sour gateway beer for those afraid of sours." I assume that someone else may be able to differentiate mango or peach, but I really couldn't. At the same time it is a nicely balanced tart, sweet, and sour. Second beer in the flight is another stretch, the Cucumber Key Lime Nevada Weisse. Light and tart, this beer finishes like a tasty dill pickle. Refreshing and delicious! 3.75/5 Third back in my flavor wheelhouse, the Playa Dust NE IPA, a hazy IPA featuring Simcoe, Amarillo, and Citra hops. Pineapple juiciness on the nose and tongue. Very tasty! 4/5 Fourth in the flight is the Simple Minds New England Pale Ale. Light yellow and hazy, and brewed with Nelson as the feature hop blended with other NZ and Simcoe. Spelt and Oats create a silky soft mouthfeel. 3.5/5 Last up is the Cutthroat Cream Ale, a 5% lawnmower beer. Easy drinking ale made with corn and lightly dry hopped. Last brewery for the night is @brasseriesaintjames, brewery number 74 on my way to 100 in 2019. Very cool vibe with the plus that they serve food! First beer was the Hopalong Hazily New England Tropical IPA. This 7.4% offering looks and smells the part, but doesn't quite hit tnt flavor I was hoping for. There a bit of an off flavor on the finish that I can't quite place. 2.75/5 Up next is the Busted Piñata, described as a "mid-haze IPA". Sweet and fruity to start, which mellows to an almost banana flavor at the finish. It's different but not unpleasant. 3.25/5 Third is the Black Gate Black Lager. Solid example of the style. Dark and roasty with a slight herbal hop finish. 3/5 Fourth beer in the flight is the Common Cider, an Apple Saison. Tastes like a standard hard cider to me. 2.5/5 Fifth up is the Frambois Raspberry Barrel Aged Sour. Sour? Yes. Raspberry? Yes. BA? Not so much. Not really my go to style, and not my favorite. 2.5/5 Last in the flight is the Oatmeal Chocolate Stout, my desert beer. Roasty coffee and chocolate notes, but a bit on the thin tasting side for my palate. 2.25/5 And thanks to getting into a discussion about beer types with a sweet, lovely waitress, I got to try 3 of their "standout beers". First is the Daily Wages Saison. Not usual a big Belgian beer drinker, but this is very approachable for the Belgian novice. 2.75/5 Second of the bonus beers is the Third Man Belgian Tripel. Wow! This is a solid beer. Pear, crackers, and pepper form the base flavor profile. Don't know if I'll drink many of these, but it's very good! 3.25/5 Final bonus beer is the Red Headed Stranger, an award winning farmhouse ale. Saturday pool party drinking with @thedrunkenthumb. Several great beers were had. Some of the highlights include: @duclawbrewingco Sour Me Unicorn Farts Glittered Sour Ale. Tastes like a glittery sweet tart version of Fruity Pebbles. 3.25/5 @leaddogbrewing Peanut Butter Chocolate Stout. Light bodied, but with huge peanut butter flavor backed by roasted malts and chocolate. 4.25/5 @streetsidebrewery Return of the Mac Coffee Blonde and Bert Got Dum Raspberry Lemon Wedding Cake Milkshake IPA. The Blonde is like a cold cup of caramel coffee, but in a beer. Sweet, creamy, and smooth, with vanilla, light coconut, vanilla, coffee, and roasted malts. 3.75/5. The IPA features Citra and Lemondrop hops. Citrus, Raspberry, and light Lemon come together with vanilla in this delicious beer. 4/5 @nocterrabrewing Tahitian Swell Line and Hawaiian Swell Line. 2 fruited Goses with similar bases and different fruit additions - Tahitian with Pink guava, strawberry, and raspberry; Hawaiian with passionfruit and mango. Back in the spring, while in Shelby, NC taking my youngest on college visits, I stopped into @newgrassbrewing and was so impressed that I brought back a bottle of the Wroth & Ruin Imperial Chocolate Peanut Toffee Nougat Brown Ale. This beer is brewed with cocoa, toasted peanuts, and toffee. Rich, bold and delicious! Roasty and sweet with distinct toffee notes. One more post for tonight. Finishing the night off with a @wolfsridgebrewing Coffee Cherry Vanilla Dire Wolf, an Imperial stout brewed with tart cherries, coffee, and vanilla beans. Wow! This is an incredible beer. Hits every flavor note in its name. Tart cherry up front, finishing with roasty, coffee, and vanilla. In Chicago for work, so had to stop into @forbiddenroot, since they're getting ready to open a brewery/restaurant in Columbus, Ohio. This is brewery number 75 on my way to 100 in 2019. Since I have not been here before, I decided to grab one of their Lunch Flights - three 5 oz. pours for $7 Up first is the Face For Radio, a 9.9% 3x IPA brewed with vanilla. Big and juicy with a distinct malt body, the hop character hints of pineapple, and the vanilla does a nice job of mellowing the booziness. 3.75/5 Next is the Augustus Bloop, a 10.5% Imperial Stout. Dark and malty with a dark cocoa bitterness to contrast the malt sweetness, which makes sense since it is brewed with "tons of cocoa nibs and hulls". 3.75/5 Final beer is the Small Talk, a 4.8% NEIPA. Moutere and Meridian hops are used in this beer, which gives it a unique hop character. More Chicagoland beer fun as I visit berety number 76 on my way to 100 in 2019, @solemnoathbeer in Naperville, IL. First beer is the Unholy Water Version 3, a "tartshake" IPA with Papaya, Passionfruit, and Pineapple with lactose, vanilla, and brown sugar. Sweet and slightly tart, with distinct smoothness from the lactose. Pretty damn tasty. 3.5/5 Second is Where The Sidewalk Ends NE-Style IPA, a #collaberationbeer with @courtyardbrew. Sweet and smooth, with almost no bitterness and a finish that hints of peanuts, believe it or not. A touch thin with respect to mouthfeel. 3/5 Third is the Snaggletooth Bandana, an American IPA. Clean, clear, and yellow, this IPA is decent, without pushing any flavor profile too far. Approachable for those that think they don't like IPAs. 3/5 Fourth is Ghost Mouse Double IPA. You'll need to visit the brewery to get the story behind tn the name, but this juice-bomb hazy double IPA, brewed with Mosaic, Sabro, Mandarina Bavaria and ElDorado hops is a solid offering. 3.25/5 Fifth is the Sabro, a Bourbon Barrel IPA. Balanced sweet bourbon character with a mild tropical sweetness. The bourbon isn't to overpowering, so this combination works. 3.25 Sixth is the Radth, a Chardonnay Barrel Aged Belgo-American Pale Ale with Cherries. Oak and chardonnay in the nose, the Belgian yeast hits with its characteristic funk right away. If there's any cherry there, it's imperceptible. It's apparently an award winner, but doesn't do much for me personally. 2.75/5 Seventh is Punk Rock for Rich Kids Belgo-American Pale Ale. Light caramel sweetness and funky Belgian yeast are the primary characteristics of this Pale Ale. 2.75/5 Last beer here is the Oktöberface Märzen Lager. Needed something simple to cleanse the palate. It's everything you'd want in the style. Chicagoland brewery adventure continues at brewery number 77 on my way to 100 in 2019, @alterbeer. My kilted Lego buddy and I grabbed a flight, and I started with the Play The Hits Mango Milkshake IPA. Brewed like a NEIPA with Lactose and dryhopped with Cryo Amarillo, Denali, Mosaic. Vanilla beans and Pink Guava are added during fermentation to add a tropical aroma and rounded flavor. Very tasty, with an almost bubblegum sweetness. 4/5 Up second is the Hell Hazed Over, an 8.1% NEIPA Golden and hazy in appearance. Smooth and creamy mouthfeel. Malt character is minimal, as hops take center stage in this brew. Vibrant aromas and juicy flavors of mango, pineapple, and melon. 4.25/5 Third beer of the flight is Alto Porto Robust Porter. Malt forward, roasty. And heavily dominated with notes of chocolate, caramel, and hints of coffee. Hops include a small dose of Kent Golding and Fuggle hops to keep the sweetness in check. 3.25/5 Last beer here is the Dank You Double IPA. Pacific Northwestern hop varieties, including Loral, Mosaic, Simcoe, Sabro and Glacier. Chicagoland beer adventure continues! Brewery number 79 on the way to 100 in 2019 is @pollyanna_brewing_company in Lemont, Illinois. First beer I had was the On The Bash, a 9.2% Scotch Ale. Rich and sweet with lots of dark caramel malts, dark fruits, and a touch of roast balances the chewy body. 3.75/5 Beer two is Zoned, a 6.3% NEIPA. This juice-bomb is double dry hopped with Mosaic, Citra, and Centennial, resulting in juicy fruit flavors and aromas. Flaked oats are also added to give it a full and rounded body to balance a very soft bitterness. 4/5 Third is the Peacher of Nectar, a 7% Hazy IPA with ginger and peaches, a #collaberationbeer with @linkstaproom and @schoolyardtavern. Brewed with fresh ginger and Citra, Mosaic, and Loral hops in the boil, and hundreds of pounds of peaches added and dry hopped with Grungeist and Loral hops. Hazy with a nice citrus fruitiness, but to my personal tastes, the ginger overwhelms everything, which takes away from full enjoyment. 2.5/5 Fourth is the Mango-Blood Orange Jiggle, a Milkshake Double IPA brewed with fresh mango, blood orange, vanilla, and lactose, and double dry hopped with Mosaic and Amarillo hops. Soft, smooth, pillowy mouthfeel with a set fruity finish. 4/5 Final beer here is the Fruhauf Oktoberfest Lager. This beer is the 2016 GABF Bronze Medal Winner for German-Style Maerzen. Clean and malty with a toast-like mouthfeel. One more Chicagoland brewery tonight - ikeandoakbrewing, brewery number 78 on the way to 100 in 2019. Grabbed a flight of 6. First beer is Mt. K2 NEIPA with Guava. Hazy, with notes of Guava, floral aroma, together with a citrus and fruity hop character. Smooth and sweet, with almost a bubble gum character. 3/5 Second is the Hopper Dropper IPA. Clean, clear, and light amber, this medium bodied IPA has a huge floral, citrus and tropical aroma and flavor. 2.75/5 Third is the Greenhorn, a Key Lime Pie Gose. A refreshing kettle sour with aromas and flavors of lime, vanilla and graham cracker with a hint of sea salt.uk not usually a gose fan, but this is pretty phenomenal. 4.25/5 Fourth is the 12 Pointer White Stout on Nitro. Light, smooth, and creamy, worth vanilla and cocoa notes. 3.25/5 Fifth is the Monkey Nut Peanut Butter Porter. Huge peanut sweetness on the nose. A light thinner than I'd expect from a PB Porter. 3.25/5 Last beer of the night is the MT. Massive Double NEIPA. Brewery number 80! on the way to 100 in 2019 is @skeletonkeybrewery. Beer one in the flight is the Jubilant! Watermelon Lime Gose. Lightly tart and fruity, with fresh watermelon character. Brewed with real watermelon, lime, lemony redbud blossoms and a touch of sea salt. A great summertime beer. 3.75/5 Second beer is the Friends Don't Lie American Pale Ale. Easy drinking at 5.7%, this APA is dry-hopped with massive amounts of Centennial hops. Notes of citrus and grapefruit on the nose, mildly bitter. 2.5/5 Third is the Redsen Irish Red Ale, a #collaberationbeer with @handtruckbrewing. A slightly malty and crisp red ale with a clean finish. 2.75/5. Last beer here is the 7th Evil Ex Schwarzbier. Scott Pilgrim would have no problem defeating this Evil Ex. Dark and roasty, but doesn't drink heavy at all. Decided the smart move was to grab a session NEIPA, so ordered a Little Hills, a session IPA with Amarillo, Citra and El Dorado hops. Grilling some T-Bones and corn on the cob, and figured what better beer to go with that than the Strawberry Basil Wheat Ale. A German Hefeweizen brewed with Wild Strawberry and Urban Till Basil.
