            Colors on the wind 🌬️⁣
⁣
In this view of Jupiter, @nasajuno captures swirling clouds in the region of the giant planet’s northern hemisphere known as “Jet N4.” ⁣
⁣
Jupiter spins once every 10 hours, and this fast rotation creates strong jet streams, separating its clouds into dark belts and bright zones that stretch across the face of the planet. More than a dozen prevailing winds sweep over Jupiter, some reaching more than 300 miles per hour (480 km per hour) at the equator.⁣
⁣
Citizen scientist Björn Jónsson created this enhanced-color image using data from the spacecraft's JunoCam imager. The raw image was taken on Sept. 11, 2019, at 11:31 p.m. EDT as Juno performed its 22nd close flyby of Jupiter. At the time the image was taken, the spacecraft was about 7,540 miles (12,140 km) from the cloud tops at a latitude of 45 degrees. ⁣

Cloud formations over the Pacific! ⁣⁣☁️☁️☁️
⁣⁣
An astronaut on the @ISS took this photo on April 4, 2019, while the station was traveling near the southernmost reaches of its orbit over the South Pacific Ocean. The striking colors within the cloud formation are a result of the local sunrise. When the Sun is at a low angle (relative to the atmosphere and the space station), sunlight passes through a thicker slice of the atmosphere. This can enhance the red end of the visible color spectrum, leading to the pink hues visible at the center of the image. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
The astronaut who took this photograph sent a message to ask if this specific cloud formation had been a named tropical cyclone. However, because the weather system was short-lived, the storm dissipated before making landfall, and thus was not named. ⁣⁣

Flying through a fire cloud ☁️🔥☁️⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ This photo from roughly 30,000 ft (9 km) shows how smoke particles reflect light in ways that make the Sun appear blazing orange. Our DC-8 flying laboratory passed directly through a large fire cloud — called a pyrocumulonimbus — on August 8 as it was rising from a fire in eastern Washington, giving scientists a look at the phenomena. These clouds form when the intense heat of wildfires lift the smoke above the boundary layer, the lowest part of Earth's atmosphere.⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ The flight was part of a joint NOAA and NASA field campaign called FIREX-AQ. Scientists are studying the composition and chemistry of smoke in the atmosphere to better understand its impact on air quality and climate.⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ NASA Earth Observatory image credit: NASA/Joshua Stevens⁣⁣ Photography credits: U.S. Naval Research Laboratory/David Peterson⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ #nasa #wildfires #science #Clouds #fires #ourplanet

What do you see in the clouds? ☁️☁️☁️ ⁣
⁣
These spiraling cloud patterns off the coast of Morocco were captured by our @NASAEarth instrument on the Suomi NPP satellite on July 19, 2019. They're known as von Kármán vortices, which can form nearly anywhere that fluid flow is disturbed by a solid object. Here, the patterns formed when winds flowed around small islands in the North Atlantic.⁣

Gaze in awe: An astronaut aboard the International Space Station (@ISS) snapped this image of the South Indian Ocean as the station flew 265 miles above the cloudy formation. The off-world laboratory orbits the Earth about every 90 minutes and helps us prepare for deep space exploration. The astronaut crews conduct experiments about Earth, space and the physical and biological sciences, benefitting people living on our home planet and future explorers. As a testbed for deep space exploration, the station is helping us learn how to keep astronauts healthy during long-duration space travel and demonstrating technologies for human and robotic exploration beyond low-Earth orbit.

EXPLOSIVE! 💥💥💥This dark, tangled web formed in a very violent fashion — it is a supernova remnant, created after a massive star ended its life in a cataclysmic explosion and threw its constituent material out into surrounding space. This created the messy formation seen in this image from our @NASAHubble Space Telescope, with threads of red snaking amidst dark, turbulent clouds.

This object is situated in the Large Magellanic Cloud, a dwarf galaxy that lies close to the Milky Way. The remnant is likely the result of a Type Ia supernova explosion; this category of supernovae is formed from the death of a white dwarf star that grows by siphoning material from a stellar companion until it reaches a critical mass and then explodes.

When explosions like this have a well-known luminosity, they can be used as markers for scientists to measure distances throughout the universe and learn more about what’s out there.

What a beauty?! 😍 During its 16th close flyby of the gas giant planet, our @NASAJuno spacecraft captured colorful swirling clouds in Jupiter's North Equatorial Belt. At the time, Juno was about 2,100 miles from the planet's cloud tops. In other words, the spacecraft was about as close to Jupiter as San Francisco is to Chicago, which is quite close when racing over a planet that's 11 times wider than Earth.

Since 2016, Juno has been penetrating Jupiter's deep, colorful zones and belts in a quest to answer fundamental questions about the planet’s origin and evolution.

Our @NASAJuno spacecraft is dolphin watching in the cosmos! 🐬 During its 16th close flyby of Jupiter, the spacecraft captured images of changing cloud formations across the southern hemisphere. If you take a close look, a cloud in the shape of a dolphin appears to be swimming through the cloud bands along the South South Temperate Belt. Stay tuned as we keep finding new shapes hidden in the swirling clouds. Credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech/SwRI/MSSS/Brian Swift/Seán Doran #nasa #space #Cosmos #jupiter #solarsystem #dolphins #Clouds
