Tiger sharks are apex predators living in tropical waters, and much of their lives remained a mystery until recently. Researchers are now learning about behaviors and migratory patterns that are beginning to fill in the puzzle of their life cycle. Despite being large predators, life in the ocean is difficult and they face many challenges to survive. As with all species, the tiger shark faces declining populations worldwide as the demand for shark fins continues. Having photographed sharks for more than three decades, it is more commonplace these days to see sharks with hooks. Living in the pelagic zone (open ocean), oceanic whitetips are shaped like aircrafts, with long pectoral fins that allow them to glide efficiently over long distances, expending little energy. In 2006, I led a trip to Cat Island in The Bahamas, where we discovered a population of this species in one of the few locations left where these animals predictably can be found. Oceanic whitetip populations have been decimated due to the demand for their fins, which are prized for shark fin soup. Like the American bison, an animal that was once abundant and then hunted to the brink, only a fraction of oceanic whitetip shark populations remains today. Their numbers declined 93% between 1995 and 2010. Recovery will be difficult, because they reach sexual maturity by age seven and have small litters of pups every one to two years. Aerial images from the #Bahamas have revealed catastrophic damage in the wake of Hurricane Dorian. “It’s total devastation. It’s decimated. Apocalyptic,” said Lia Head-Rigby, who helps run a local hurricane relief group and flew over the Bahamas’ hard-hit Abaco Islands, seen here on Sept. 3. “It’s not rebuilding something that was there; we have to start again.” The storm reached the island nation as a category 5 hurricane on Sunday and then slowly moved westward, ripping off roofs, flooding houses and leaving at least seven people dead. Abaco and Grand Bahama islands, with a combined population of about 70,000, are known for their marinas, golf courses and all-inclusive resorts. More than 13,000 houses, or about 45% of the homes on Abaco and Grand Bahama were believed to be severely damaged or destroyed by #hurricanedorian, according to Red Cross spokesman Matthew Cochrane. U.N. officials said more than 60,000 people on the hard-hit islands will need food, and the Red Cross said some 62,000 will need clean drinking water. Since Hurricane Dorian tore through the #Bahamas—leveling homes, drowning animals and leaving at least dozens of people dead—it seems like survivors are in the midst of an “apocalypse.” That's how Brian Symonette described the aftermath of the Category 5 storm to TIME as he traveled around Great Abaco Island to get supplies and care for his family. As the scale of the destruction shifts into focus, Symonette says the island is running out of food, water and fuel: “All the banks are gone, all the grocery stores are gone. I haven’t spent money in six days. It’s just been trade—‘O.K., you have gas, I have a truck. Hurricane Dorian has been downgraded to a Category 3 storm after it hit the Bahamas as one of the most powerful Atlantic hurricanes on record. The storm is still battering the #Bahamas, which suffered devastating damage over the Labor Day weekend. After remaining almost entirely stationary, #hurricanedorian has begun creeping northwest at 1 mph. It is about 110 miles from West Palm Beach, Fla., according to the latest forecast from the @noaahurricanes. At least five people have been killed in the Bahamas so far, according to the country’s prime minister. The United States Coast Guard is reportedly conducting rescue operations on the islands it can access, including one seen here on Sept. 2. According to the National Hurricane Center, the storm has winds speeds up to 120 mph, as of Tuesday morning. “Devastating winds and storm surge will continue to affect Grand Bahama Island” throughout Tuesday, the National Hurricane Center warned. Ramón Espinosa is no stranger to hurricanes. The Associated Press photographer, based in Cuba, has covered storms in the #caribbean for the past 14 years, he says, "but nothing compared to this one." Hurricane Dorian hit the #Bahamas as a Category 5 storm with 185 mph winds, becoming the strongest on record to strike the islands. Dorian's death toll currently stands at 50, but more than 1,000 people are still missing. "It was giant, weird, stationary and crushing everything," says Espinosa. In the days afterward, his images of dramatic rescues felt startling and immediate—the closest thing to being there, writes @paulmoakley. More recently, he was able to travel to the areas most deeply affected, producing images that show the epic destruction yet feel like a lament to what was lost. In these photographs, a chair is caught in a tree; Tereha Davis eats rice among the scattered remains of her home; and cars are stranded on a damaged road.
