No... no veo ninguna mano levantada.... . . Autism on the Road

Yes, he's flicking popcorn around. Yes, he's playing with his food. Yes, it's making my living room rug incredibly messy. And no, I don't really care. I can clean up the messes. Autism on the Road

You. Guys. I am so proud of this kid!!!! Last year, Keane couldn't stand upright on his skates unless I was holding him up. I remember thinking that skating was going to be skill that would take us a long time to get. It requires so much - balance, coordination, etc. And then this year, on our very first day skating - this amazing child of mine starts motoring around the ice rink like he'd been doing it all year!! Did you see how at the of the video he pushes his skating aid away from him and skates to the edge all on his own!?! YOU GUYS!!! I am SO proud of him that my heart feels like it's pounding out of my chest! #firstskateoftheyear #skating #yeg #winterfun #AUTISM #asd #autismacceptance #autismcommunity #autismparents #autismawareness #autismfamily #autismyeg #autismparent #autismlove #autismmom #autismdad #autismlife #autismspectrumdisorder #autismontheroad #autismsiblings #autismrocks #specialneedsfamily #preverbal #specialneeds #sensoryprocessingdisorder #sensoryseeker #yeg #alberta

Autism on the Road

I forgot to post this awhile back, but this happened after the huge meltdown that Keane had a few days ago. He asked me for his Toy Story book, which I happily retrieved for him, thinking that he was going to ask me to read it to him (a rare occurrence). But instead, he asked his sister to read it to him (even rarer occurrence)! These 2 are my everything. ❤️ #AUTISM #asd #autismacceptance #autismcommunity #autismparents #autismawareness #autismfamily #autismyeg #autismparent #autismlove #autismmom #autismdad #autismlife #autismspectrumdisorder #autismontheroad #autismsiblings #autismrocks #specialneedsfamily #preverbal #specialneeds #sensoryprocessingdisorder #sensoryseeker #yeg #alberta

Autism on the Road

Today is one of those "F*** Autism" days. Days that I rarely have because, quite frankly, there's so much about Keane's autism that I love. And then we have days like today. When he's sitting happily in the tub, splashing in his bubbles (one of his favorite regulating activities), and the next moment, he's slamming his fists down as hard as he can in the water. Then when I take him out of the tub (out of fear that he might completely dysregulate and seriously injure himself), he starts throwing himself down the stairs onto the landing, slamming his knees and elbows on the ground. Punching, slapping and pulling at his own face. Trying to rip his ears off. All while screaming and crying at me to give him "Squishies" (deep pressure) to help him regulate. And as I'm desperately holding him, applying deep pressure, telling him everything will be ok and that I'm here for him, I'm terrified that he is going to accidentally knock me out as he's thrashing against me. Because he's much stronger than he was last time he had a meltdown this big. And my husband wasn't home to help me. Olivia watched in fear and worry, running out of her room asking what happened. So I frantically tell her to go back to her room and close the door, so that she doesn't get hurt in the crossfire. And also because I don't want her to see her brother like this ... Because this isn't him. This is a byproduct of his autism. And 20 minutes later, 20 minutes of his own body feeling like it's going to explode, he starts to feel like himself again. Sobbing hysterically into his blanket, face swollen and red from the barrage of punches he unleashed on himself, he starts to calm down. The punches stop. And I sat on the ground beside his bed, crying with him, rubbing his back and telling him how much I love him. Autism is hard. It is so, so, so very hard. And some days it feels defeating. But this kid perseveres through it all. He conquers it. I don't know how he does it ... Because moments like this destroy me. He's so much stronger than I am. He is my hero. #AUTISM #asd #autismacceptance #autismcommunity #autismparents #autismawareness #autismfamily #autismyeg #autismparent #autismlove #meltdowns

First time answering a question of what are they making ? Ashton was watching his iPad and they were making slime and as I always do. I asked him questions, “what is that Ashton?” As I point to something, he would answer me with that but anything more complicated he could not . For e.g I would ask “Ashton what are they making ?” He would not answer me . Well tonight when I asked what they were making Ashton said “ they are making slime . “ well done Ashton .. he is now five years and three weeks. #asd #autismawareness #autismacceptance #autismfamily #autismcommunity #autismcommunication #speechtherapy @autismspeaks @autism_journey @autismqueensland @speechtherapyzone

He was very engrossed in cooking the fish and then getting the toast that he had previously put in the toaster . He is unable to answer my questions as in the beginning I ask him what he is cooking 🍳 he is very focused on the task and so unable to communicate with me as well. He does interact a little . Very good role play. ACE programme update. 14th July 2019 ACE opens for enrolments on the Gold Coast. . Autism Connect Early (ACE) programme has been developing for a year now. . Our partnership with University of New England is one that will have a practical implication for early intervention programmes and will bring about societal change. . . The ACE programme is focused on using the research evidence to develop innovative educational approaches for children with autism , to achieve this we have partnered with the University of New England to embed continued review and evaluation across ACE activities so that we obtain an objective measure of how children are developing and growing. This partnership will allow ongoing research to be undertaken in an early childhood environment. . . The ACE programme will be implemented into early learning centres all over Australia. Our first has been operating for six months on the Gold Coast . Our aim is to be able to reach as many autistic children as possible and be able to provide them with affordable early intervention that has proven positive outcomes . Our journey has given us an increasing awareness Of the struggles and the impediments faced by families who are anxious to provide for their children with affective education and therapeutic therapy but whose efforts are being thwarted by confusion regarding best practice and financial restraints, and a lack of facilities available to these children 👶 my husband and I are compelled to do something that will give the children a chance to find their place in this world. . . Our early learning environments will have access to all the necessary therapies required for successful early intervention. . . ACE programme will have therapists on site as well as those we consult with, this will enable parents to be able to have all the necessary specialists available for them and their child thus relieving the stress of having to access a variety of therapists in different locations. Ashton lasted for a short while but only wanted to draw fish, a puffer fish, an angler fish which he calls an angry fish and a tornado. By immersing Ashton in a variety of activities and exposing him to the wonder of what could be we are hoping that each time a little of life stays with him as he experiences the moment and so draws from it for future experiences as we continue to build his life story which we hope one day he will be able to recall.. #art #freemind @asd_classroom_ideas #asd #autismawareness #autismspectrumdisorder #autismspectrumdisorderfoundation #lifeskills @autismspeaks @autism_journey @autismdads @autism_diaries @autismparentingmagazine @autismtransformed @autismspectrumandbeyond @autismspectrumneedsmore @autismspectrumaustralia @autismspectrumtherapies

Ashton riding his ezy rider. He was unable to do this six months ago. He could not get the concept of one leg first and then the other. The more lizard crawls etc ( an exercise we do with Ashton to get alternate sides of his body to connect, through a brain balance programme he does in America ) and the more practice everyday with his ezy rider then eventually he was able to actually make his body work to make the bike work. It is just through persistent measures and constant encouragement that give Ashton the ability to complete a long term goal like this. ........................................There was a study in japan ( on mice) which has demonstrated that exercise can eliminate the excess brain connections of autism. .................................... The university of Tokyo found that exercise can change the connections in the brain that are associated with autism. #asd #autismawareness #autismcommunity #autismspectrumdisorder #autismfamily @autism_understanding @autismdads @autism_journey @autismspeaks @storiesaboutautism @autism.parents @autism.mum.adventures @autkonnect @autism_diaries @autismtransformed @autism.exercise.sport @autism_fighters @autism_understanding

Notes from Ashton’s occupational therapist Liz. • Drawing: Ashton was able to follow my request to draw his alien creation. He needed a little help to get started (I drew a body). Ashton was able to add a head, arms, legs, ‘a long dragon tail’ independently, and with prompting added eyes and a mouth. He started using his left hand for the drawing activity, but swapped to his right hand. I did not correct his pencil grasp today as I wanted to be more focused on the social activity and the drawing content. Wonderful play scenario- Ashton has progressed so much in his ability to be able to join in a play activity (with an adult who is patient and gives him time and leads the play, and then follows his lead if he suggests something ) with his own ideas on what will happen and his ability to engage in associative play. Ashton is not able to engage in social play as this requires a more advanced ability to share ideas and follow established rules. Ashton is unable to take on a role and guide others as to what to do next, it is all really adult led with interjections of his play ideas being followed by the adult not yet by children. #asd #autismawareness #autismacceptance #stagesofplay #seacreatures @occupationaltherapyabc @seacreatur.es @autismclassroom123 @autismtransformed @autismparentingmagazine @autism.magazine @autism_diaries @autism.mum.adventures @autism_journey @autkonnect @autismspeaks @autismdads @bhwcares

He was initially upset that the boundary was placed to ride it outside on the deck, but was able to regroup and engage in the activity. After a few goes, Ashton was able to balance (holding adult hand) and operate the pedals with success for about 5 metres. Wonderful associative play with Anastasia. Anastasia has to work hard to get Ashton to participate in play. She persists because she has had years of experience with how to play with her brother, other children would not. We continue to model play scenarios in the hope that one day Ashton will be able to negotiate the difficult space of child’s play, I say difficult because if it does not come naturally there is so much involved in learning how to play. . . . You must be a good negotiator You must be able to plan You must be able to share your thoughts You must be able to compromise You must be able to problem solve You must be able to have two way communication You must be able to have joint attention You must be able to be proficient socially You must be flexible You must be able to take turns You must have a receptive play partner who understands you ... ... All of these things are outside Ashton’s reach at the moment That’s why we model play and one day with all our help Ashton may join the world with all the skills he needs to be competent and comfortable to participate in our socially structured world. #asd #autismawareness #autismmom #autismacceptance #autismspeaks #autismfamily #autismparents #autismsupport #autismspectrumdisorder #autismclassroom #autismdads @autismspeaks @autismdads @autism_understanding @autismspeaks @autism.mum.adventures @autism_diaries @autismtransformed @autism.magazine @autismparentingmagazine @autismdads @autismotherhood @autismsupportandawareness @storiesaboutautism @autism_journey @autism__community @bhwcares @occupationaltherapynyc @occupationaltherapytips
