We hope to see this t-shirt worn proudly some day by one of the many Asylum-seekers new to Maine. The drop-off of clothing has outgrown our porch, we’re moving the drop-off location to The Gem foyer. Thank you for all your help and contributions. It’s hard to imagine leaving a country in conflict and traveling some 5,000 miles over many years to end up in Maine, we’re so proud that so many Mainers are welcoming these folks with open arms. Ps: We (and by extension, the Maine Immigrants’ Rights Coalition) need more bins for sorting. If you have a spare durable bin, we’d appreciate it.

The general consensus walking out of theater 2 is: “wow, I’m going to have to think about that one.” When we were at Sundance, this film had a lot of buzz, but no one could quite put words to what it was “about.” A story that everyone agrees is beautiful (and unsettling), but can’t put words to what the movie is actually “about.” To me, that sounds like art. I was especially intrigued by the comments of @elcleonardo in his instagram post last week. Shaun is a friend from way way back and currently has a show up at @thenewmuseum. For the past decade, I’ve seen Shaun’s work take on internal struggle with cultural identity (he literally wrestled an invisible opponent) to Toxic Masculinity and most recently endemic incarceration. When someone like Shaun says “beautifully (if I can use that word) portrays...” I’m intrigued. We saw this movie Friday night and I’m still making sense of it. This is why we’re here. We don’t get to do it every week, but screening films that challenge our audience is important. For those of you that have already seen this film, we respect your willingness to take a risk on a film you may never have heard of. For those of you that haven’t been in yet, don’t miss this film while it’s at The Gem!
