Going north!

Segovia, but pink

Many moons ago, the Muisa people would cast their gold to the bottom of this lake as an act of worship. The gold is gone—long since taken by the Spaniards—but the sacredness remains.

            A life update:
1. I’m back from Colombia and have completed my Fulbright Grant! •
2. Celebrating month no. 10 with Lyme disease. This particular aspect of my life has been pretty much all-consuming, though difficult to talk about in terms of how I’ve had to change so much of who I am in order to accommodate this disease. My perspective has been permanently altered. While I could write a book, I’ll just focus on the good things for the sake of this caption: life is an incredible gift, nothing should be taken for granted, and finally, our bodies are so special and so important—we must take loving care of ourselves and not waste the health that we are given (catch me on that no-grain, no-dairy, no-sugar, no-alcohol, no-caffeine Lyme disease diet 😅). I am thankful for the empathy I have gained from this experience, for the relationships that have weathered some of the worst times, and above all, lord am I thankful for vegan dairy alternatives (vegan cheese, I’m lookin @ u). •
3. I’ll be staying here in VA/stateside for at least a couple of months to focus on healing (don’t be deceived when I continue posting photos of Colombia). If you are around and want to hang, lemme know! I’m also planning expeditions to DC, NC, and perhaps TN so if you’re out that way, let’s talk. •
4. I never properly said farewell to Colombia—it has been hard to be my overly-sentimental, 10-page-goodbye-caption, these-tears-are-just-the-ghosts-of-memories self when life has hit me with something much bigger and much harder than a cultural experience abroad. Nonetheless, I leave ten months of myself behind in Colombia, and I return to the the US with a new tune in my heart—one that sounds like the gaitas, the cumbia circles, the salsa playing at the corner store. I’ll sing your song for the rest of my life, Colombia <3 •
5. The future, as always, is a great and powerful mystery indeed 🎶

I know why the coffee in Colombia tastes so good:
It grows in the light of a rainbow.
It is kissed by every color.
And its roots toast the passing of the storm with a deep drink of mist.
And the leaves warm themselves in the late evening sun
and sigh sweetly at the stars.

What will we do without Laney Lawson now that she has left Colombia? A heart the size of Missouri, love as large as Bogotá, compassion and drive so great that they span the globe—all the way to China. Thank you for teaching me about friendship and caring. For being by my side for some of the darkest times. For being there for some of the brightest times too.
I’ll see you soon—somewhere on this big blue planet. Hasta pronto mi querida amiga ♥️

“Green” was a paint sample, a crayon color, a tree in the park. Green was a freshly cut lawn, a hue of the rainbow. Green, simply put, was a color. 🌿
But in the coffee region, “green” became the very air I breathed. It became an energy, an essence, a state of being. A warmth in the earth beneath my feet. 🌿
Never before has a land been more verdant, more alive, vibrating with the dance of the hummingbirds, the fireflies, the flowers🌿
And never since has “green” been the same.
