#chordyoga - minor II-V-I idea from 0:10 w / alternative musical notation inspired by Ted Greene’s 'chord diagram-approach’, should be pretty intuitive to read: the numbers show the sequence of the notes, circles indicate chord tones, black dots are sustained notes from prior voicings. The chord diagrams visualize how voicing shapes are related and how they can be connected melodically on the fretboard, e.g. the first m7b5 voicing and the following ‘C∆6’-ish variation leading to the next harmony. Also, let it ring! Allow the notes to ring as long as possible. • ‘Neo Soul Guitar 101’ & ‘Concepts for Solo Guitar Performance’ (eBooks) ➡️ links in bio. Chord-melody phrases! (4) Well, chord-melody might not be the proper technical term for this but having a couple of open strings and runs between all these block chords certainly adds some flavor. ’Using open strings and harmonics instead of a fretted note creates a variety of intervallic textures and allows for longer sustained notes. It creates a similar effect as a sustain pedal does on a piano: e.g. smaller intervals like major and minor seconds resonating together. "I find this way of thinking interesting because it opens possibilities for dissonant or closely voiced chords not so commonly used on the guitar." - Bill Frisell [2] • from ‘Concepts for Solo Guitar Performance’ eBook - lessons, tunes and transcriptions in standard notation/tab format ➡️ links in description. • gear: Road Worn Tele, Silverface Champ, Marine Layer Reverb. • • • •

Do you know this tune? My folks over yonder were observing a special holiday today/yesterday. They never made us sing this in school (thanks) so just right off the top of my head. Also skipped some parts, common practice with this one for a couple of reasons. At the end the hymn of the German Democratic Republic crept in, so be brave political sensitive people. Both are hip and Hanns Eisler wrote some sick tunes, as well as Haydn did. • ‘Neo Soul Guitar 101’ & ‘Concepts for Solo Guitar Performance’ (eBooks) ➡️ links in bio. Chord melody phrases (5) Pretty much following the original changes of ’The Wind Cries Mary' ( V - IV - I / II - VI) except for a diminished I chord and a couple of descending ∆ chords between I chord and V. ⚠️ The guitar is tuned down a half step, the notation looks more like standard tuning to avoid a sea of accidentals ;) • From Chord melody phrases (1) A quick peek into concepts for harmonizing, substituting and new voicing ideas. Revisiting a once well-known place. What are the solo changes for Hendrix‘ The Wind Cries Mary again? F ... Eb ... don‘t play the weird chord ... and there it was, you played the weird chord 😱 to be continued ...

Live amplification ideas: odd couple? Last gig‘s gear setup. If you don’t want to risk your fav tube amp‘s life while traveling by plane this is a hip sounding alternative. Originally intended for acoustic instruments this black box by AER makes a solidbody sing as well and it’s so light you can take it for a walk. Wonder what sounds are possible by adding an archetype plugin to the signal chain ... have to try that rather soon. • end of summer sale ‘Concepts for Solo Guitar Performance’ (eBook) half off ➡️ links in description. Some chord yoga (1) A II-V-I in E with ‘∆-voicings’ only. Short breakdown: F #- comes with a 9 and E in the bass if you use this A∆ inversion. The altered colors in B7 (b9 / # 9 / b13) are covered with a voicing from the third mode of C melodic minor: Eb∆ #11. You can also alternate between the b9 (C) and root (B) for some inner movement. Finally, the I chord. This E∆9 voicing is very likely the most popular chord on IG ;) • From Chord melody phrases (1) A quick peek into concepts for harmonizing, substituting and new voicing ideas. Chord-melody phrases! (2) Popular opinion claims that guitarists always play some pentatonic scale and ‘Hendrix' chords. Well, it certainly sits well with this Hendrix tune: 'Up from the Skies’, inspired by @frankpotenza ’s rendition of the tune. Caution, a ‘non-pentatonic based / non-Hendrix chord’ hides in there. Chord-melody phrases! (1) Today: II-V-I 📻 You can find the beginning of the phrase in Joe Pass’ playing. There’s also a secondary dominant (C7alt) to lead the way and my favorite treatment for dominant chords: moving from sus- to ∆ #5 voicings. Here it’s an A∆ #5, the III∆ of Gb-Melodic Minor which turns the F7 into F7 #9b13. • From ‘Neo Soul Guitar 101’ Lessons, tunes and transcriptions in standard notation/tab format on bandcamp, soundslice, patreon ➡️ links in description.

Chord-melody phrases! (3) Modal subversions: Would it be a stretch to have quartal harmonies in Nirvana’s ‘All Apologies’? Stylistically, maybe, for one’s hand, yes ;) The main riff in Nirvana's "All Apologies" contains every pitch of Db-Mixolydian and emphasizes the intervalic movements that are characteristic for the Mixolydian mode (e.g. 3rd-4th, 6th-b7). Here are a couple of voicing ideas for a modal context like this. • from ‘Concepts for Solo Guitar Performance’ eBook - lessons, tunes and transcriptions in standard notation/tab format ➡️ links in description. • • •
