Welcome to the world of octopush, a sport that is a kind of underwater hockey. Octopush was invented in the 1950s in Britain to help divers keep fit during the winter months. It has gained a small but dedicated following in Europe and Asia. This year the sport will make its debut at the Southeast Asian Games, the region's biennial mini-Olympics. #sport #octopush #watersport #watersports #swimming #Hockey #pool #Malaysia Photos by @mrasfan and @berryadek

Japan have done it again, this time against the team ranked No 1 in the world just two weeks ago. The hosts came from nine points down to beat Ireland 19-12 after playing with a pace and fervour that the humidity and countdown clock could not dim and such was the noise when the final whistle sounded it would have caused the nearby Mount Fuji to wobble. It was hot in the women's marathon at the World Athletics Championships in Doha. Here Belarus's Volha Mazuronak and Portugal's Salome Rocha try to stay cool, in a race eventually won by Ruth Chepngetich of Kenya. A total of 28 from the 68 starters had to abandon due to the gruelling conditions, even with the race run after midnight local time. Rugby union fans across Japan celebrated wildly after their side's stunning World Cup win against Ireland. The World Cup hosts beat the No 2-ranked Irish side 19-12 in Shizuoka. Not since Japan's win over South Africa four years ago in Brighton has the sport seen such a momentous upset. 'What we have witnessed tonight, which is you know, nearly 50,000 people – 40,000 of which were red jerseys – you feel really proud as a coach and as a rugby team,' said Japan head coach Jamie Joseph. 'We didn't want to let down the country, but tonight really helped us.'

Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce won her fourth 100m title at the World Championships in Doha last night – one more than Usain Bolt. Speaking after the race, she said: "This is my fourth World Championship title. I'm 32, I'm a mum and I'm here breaking barriers and inspiring a nation of women who continue to dream and continue to believe that anything is possible." #run #runner #winner #goals #champion #worldchampionship #doha #qatar #sport #running #athletics #mother #motherhood #womeninsport #inspirationalwomen

This is how to do it @thierryhenry and @robert_pires07. Well played, @fcshakhtar Under-19s. The young Shakhtar Donetsk pulled off the two-man penalty in a Uefa Youth League game at Atalanta. In October 2005, Henry and Pires attempted a similar trick, only to find themselves red-faced as Pires failed to lay the ball off correctly for his fellow countryman. The Shakhtar goal was scored by Georgy Sudakov and the match finished in a 2-2 draw. The 'tandem' penalty routine has been successfully carried out by other players too. Lionel Messi passed to Luis Suárez, who scored for Barcelona in 2016; Johan Cruyff and Jesper Olsen made the routine famous by exchanging passes after a penalty for Ajax in 1982; and Belgium’s Rik Coppens and Andre Piters pulled off the ruse against Iceland in 1957. #Goal #football #Shakhtar #goals #soccer #penalty #skill #soccer

River Plate have the advantage at the halfway point of their Copa Libertadores semi-final against Boca Juniors. Goals from Rafael Borre and Ignacio Fernandez gave River a 2-0 win at the Monumental, meaning Boca have it all to do when the teams meet in La Bombonera for the second leg on 22 October. The winners of this Superclásico tie will meet either Gremio or Flamengo in the final in Santiago on 23 November. #riverplate #bocajuniors #sport #futbol #football #soccer #goals #CopaLibertadores #copa #argentina #buenosaires #Superclasico

One of these players scored an overhead kick for Nakhon Ratchasima FC, but it isn't easy to work out which one. Both players leapt into the air at the same time and both attempted to scored with an overhead kick. Defensive midfielder Kitsada Hemvipat claimed the goal, reaching the ball just before Leandro Assumpcao. The goal came too late in the game for Nakhon Ratchasima, who were beaten 3-2 by Buriram United in the Thai League. #football #Goal #goals #skill #overhead #skills #soccer #thailand

Finally. After so many injuries, heartbreaks, and self-eviscerations, @johnsonthompson is the world heptathlon champion. A massive personal best of 6,981 meant she became the first person to topple Nafi Thiam, the Olympic champion and arguably the best female athlete in any sport, since 2016. She burst into tears after crossing the line and said all of her setbacks over the last few years had been worth it in the end. “It makes it more special and sweet for sure,” she said. “This is crazy for me. The low moments have helped me come back." #sport #KJT #worldchampionship #champion #goals #winner #liverpool #heptathlon #athletics #worldchampion #gold #doha

The good news for Manchester United fans is that Ole Gunnar Solskjær has admitted that things have moved on since his glory days as a player. The United manager has frequently been accused of living in the past, but when it was suggested after the tame showing against AZ Alkmaar that his side have completely lost the fear factor of old, Solskjær was powerless to disagree. “We are not in the 1990s now – it’s a different era, a different group that we are building,” Soskjaer said. “We know there are going to be ups and downs but I’m ready to see these boys blossom. There’s not many clubs of our stature that play the young players that we do. We give them a chance to come through and I’m sure some of them will go on to be part of a successful team.” The story now moves on to Newcastle, where Solskjær will be attempting to claim his first away win since the famous victory in Paris six months ago that persuaded the club to let him have the job on a permanent basis. Newcastle know even better than their opponents that it is not the 1990s any longer. For a short while in that decade they were title rivals of Alex Ferguson’s side, but they have been in the Championship since then, disillusionment with owner Mike Ashley set in long ago and last week they were walloped 5-0 at Leicester. This is a tricky fixture for Solskjær, for while on the one hand it appears to present an opportunity to pick up three points, should Manchester United fail it would be legitimate to wonder which Premier League opponents might be beatable away from home. #mufc #manchesterunited #united #football #sport #epl #soccer #PremierLeague #NUFC #newcastle

A tearful Tomás Lavanini leaves the field after being sent off in the 18th minute of Argentina's Rugby World Cup game against England, for a tackle that made contact with the head of a stooping Owen Farrell. With the Pumas trailing 5-3, it was a decisive moment, as England made the superior numbers pay in an eventual 39-10 victory. Spurs in crisis: it is probably a tribute to the progress made at Tottenham that Mauricio Pochettino’s team have managed to attract this kind of talk so early in the season. But there is a tipping point to these things, and the sense of a Spurs side disappearing into itself deepened on the south coast as Brighton produced a wonderful attacking performance to run out deserved 3-0 winners. Steve Bruce and Mike Phelan will meet at St James' Park today when Newcastle United host Manchester United in the Premier League. The two players were on the same side 30 years ago, playing for Manchester United as they endured a terrible start to the season. United have nine points from their first seven games this season; they only picked up seven points from their first seven games that campaign – and Alex Ferguson was in charge. Both of these two old teammates need some points today. #mufc #NUFC #football #sport #PremierLeague #newcastle #manchesterunited #sports Photo via @gettyfc

Jill Ellis has taken charge of her final match as head coach of the US women's team. Ellis was appointed in 2014 and went on to win 106 of her 132 games in charge, guiding the team to successive World Cups triumphs in 2015 and 2019. Her final match, a friendly with South Korea in Chicago, ended in a 1-1 draw. "The opportunity to coach this team and work with these amazing women has been the honour of a lifetime," said Ellis, who was born in England but moved to the US as a teenager. #usa #us #USWNT #soccer #sport #football #WomensFootball

Scotland beat Russia 61-0, their biggest win in 15 years, and earned the bonus point they needed just five minutes into the second half. That means that they now have 10 points in the pool, which puts them one behind Ireland, and four behind Japan, who they need to beat in Yokohama on Sunday. It’ll have to be a handsome victory, too, because if Japan pick up a bonus point for losing by seven points or less, Scotland will need one too, for scoring four tries or more. Assuming that is, they get to play at all. Super Typhoon Hagibis is forecast to hit the Tokyo area this weekend. World Rugby have not announced their contingency plans yet and it is not clear whether, when, or where the match will go ahead. #rwc2019 #rugby #sport #rugbyworldcup #scotland #russia #ireland

Andy Murray reacted angrily to what he described as "noises" from his opponent, Fabio Fognini, when he was about to volley during their bad-tempered match at the Shanghai Masters.
