Access to cooling is a necessity for health, wellbeing, comfort, and productivity — it is a development imperative.

#india is facing a difficult challenge - providing citizens access to #cooling in a way that doesn’t strain the electricity grid or contribute to climate change. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ One of the ways in which the Indian government is tackling this challenge is through the India National Cooling Action Plan. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The are also supporting the #GlobalCoolingPrize to help us identify a breakthrough cooling technology that can be scaled within India and other hot and humid markets around the world. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Want to learn more about how India is solving its cooling challenge? John Roome, Sr. Director of Climate Change at the @worldbank, joined us for the US launch event and explained the scale of the Prize's impact. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ "Every year, 1.5 million children die because of diseases that could have been prevented by vaccines, but 25% of vaccines have to be thrown out because of lack of cooling. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ We also lose up to 50% of food post-harvest in developing countries, for lack of adequate cold chain. That food waste would be the 5th or 6th largest cause of emissions alone. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The #GlobalCoolingPrize, if we get it right, could reduce at least 0.5 degree centigrade of global warming by 2100. If we can tackle this issue, we get development gains and improvements in livelihoods, and we get climate adaptation, and we get climate mitigation. The size of this Prize is huge."

This week @rockymtninst, @csis, @conservationxlabs, and IGSD hosted the U.S. Launch of the #GlobalCoolingPrize: A Conference on Breakthrough Cooling Technology and Climate Change. The event featured keynote addresses from Gina McCarthy of @harvardchansph and John Roome of @worldbank who spoke about the need to enhance access to climate-friendly cooling technology to communities around the world — protecting the most vulnerable populations, enhancing human health, and supporting economic development. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Furthermore, the event highlighted potential technologies to solve the cooling challenge, and opportunities to finance and scale these energy-efficient and low-carbon solutions. The two panel discussions featured Paul Bunje (@conservationxlabs), Gabrielle Dreyfus (IGSD), Bill Sisson (WBCSD North America), David Nemtzow (@energy), Eric Toone (Breakthrough Energy Ventures), Stacy Swann (Climate Finance Advisors), William F. Martin (formerly @energy), and Jason Hartke (@tosaveenergy). ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Thank you to all of the speakers and panelists, and those that attended the event or tuned in via livestream. If you were unable to watch the event live, you can view a full recording via the link in our bio. 👈Photo credit: @csis

Gina McCarthy is tired of talking about climate change as a planetary, polar bear, glacier-focused issue. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ At the Global Cooling Prize US Launch Event in DC, McCarthy of @harvardchansph said; ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ "This isn’t about polar bears, it is about us. We are dealing with a problem that is perhaps the biggest public health challenge of our time. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Climate change is an equity issue. It is simply not fair to have the ability to protect ourselves from the heat we’re seeing when 1/3 of the population already live in places where the heat is already intolerable, and in a few years that will go up to half of the population. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ But we’re also dealing with the biggest opportunity we have, if we think about investing in those public health problems on our way to a sustainable and more just future. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ So step up here! Let’s stop being depressed about what isn’t happening, and let’s spark new solutions to come to the table. That’s what the Global Cooling Prize is all about." ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Watch a full recording of McCarthy’s keynote address via the link in our bio 👈. Photo credit: @csis
