❤️ you don't need to speak the same language to communicate. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ in the omo valley, your wealth is determined by how many cattle you have. but i was more impressed by the sense of styles and accessories, especially of the arbore tribe. young girls and women decorate themselves in colorful beads and jewelry. just like anywhere else, to make them feel more attractive! and i could not help myself. i was fawning over her style and she knew it. i learned that most of the colorful beadwork and jewelry actually comes in from kenya and women go to the market to shop. if you swipe, you can get a closer look at her rings. these are made locally from scrap metal or even bullet casings. i purchased a few from her and wear them every day! __ #everydayafrica #ethiopia #journeyofgirls #culturetrip ph: @nibbytravels

🌺 i really wanted to show off some of the rings i got in ethiopia! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ the gold ring i purchased at the turmi market and it’s made from a bullet casing. the others are crafted from random scrap metals. sometimes telephone wires, car parts or even other jewelry. the large coil i bought during my visit to the arbore tribe. from the woman in my recent post. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ __ pc: @finding.jules #777luckyfish #featuremeseas #hvmansouls #artofvisuals #l0tsabraids #justgoshoot

🌿 Gonna keep toning it down so they don’t delete my account. They already removed some of my creative account collaboration features 🙄 so I can’t work with other brands and they blocked any hashtags I use as punishment. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ But I do appreciate all the comments and DMs recognizing how much other ‘inappropriate’ overtly sexual content is rolling around with ZERO consequences. Anyway... 💁🏼‍♀️ I really want to share some other stories from my travels! Especially this one from the Dorze village. When I got to the Dorze village, one of the first things my local guide showed me was his family home. The homes here are completely woven using bamboo and false banana tree fiber. The Dorze are well-known weavers and use that skill in creating textiles and building their compounds. The inside of each home is divided into sections, includes a fire pit and even a pen for their livestock! 🐷🐣 Yes, the animals sleep inside with them for warmth. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ My guide explained that the homes are built so high, to account for all the termites. Instead of trying to get rid of the termites, the locals adjusted their lifestyle to accommodate them. The houses can be built 20 feet high anticipating the termites to eat away at the base. Over the years, the homes will shrink lower and lower. When it gets too small for the entire family to fit - it will transition to just a kitchen or storage room. And around this time the children might be getting married or move out. And they will build the next large structure as needed. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This was one of the first villages I visited and also one of the explanations that really stuck with me. I really appreciate how people in this region live in harmony with nature and care for their animals. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ They appreciate nature so much that even their homes deliberately resemble the head of a large wild animal. 👉🏽 Can you guess which animal that is? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ __ #exploreafrica #nowdiscovering #backpackwithme #dorzevillage #traveltagged #triptocommunity

📍turmi, ethiopia. this was captured towards the end of my omo valley trip. one of the few "staged" photos that i was able to execute. not because it was difficult, but because i had to find that creative energy within me to do it. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ every day in the omo valley was exhausting. not just from driving hours and hours to try and find nomadic tribes. but from the emotional exhaustion of it all. how can i genuinely express to each indigenous group my desire to learn, embrace and appreciate their traditions. and how do i not put my lens, judgement or standards on polygamy, female circumcision or other rituals. there are so many factors that come into play when discussing cultural preservation, especially in ethiopia. and i have so much more to share. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ my first blog is up! it is just my travel guide and itinerary 🙌🏽[link in bio]. my next blog post discussing the more difficult topics is almost ready, i just need a little more time to fine tune it. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ __ #sheisnotlost #neverstopexploring #girlswhotravel #allaboutadventures #spiritoflife #ethiopia #omovalley pc: @nibbytravels 🌿

Thanks to @nibbytravels I had the opportunity to meet The King of the Konso tribe. It was a rainy afternoon and Nibby drove thru all types of terrain to get me there. I entered the King's compound and waited. A few minutes later Kaala (king) Gezahegne Woldu greeted me with a huge smile, firm handshake and nearly perfect English. Kaala Gezahegne serves in the highest leadership position as The King of the 300,000 Konso people. He graduated with a degree in engineering and was working outside of his community when his father passed away and he was called to take over the reign. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ We sat in his visiting area and he attended to my endless questions gracefully. I asked about technology, education, cultural preservation, tourist, photography, everything! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ His answers all circled around the same theme. Balance. As someone who left his village to study, worked a full-time job in the city and has international experience - he said he wants people from his village to maintain their culture, language and lifestyle. And preservation is important. But, he understands if they want to leave and experience a more modern lifestyle. His hope is that people will do both. Live part of the time in a city to study and work. And part of the time back at home maintaining their traditions and raising a family. Our conversation went on and on for at least an hour. And I decided to record my last question. I asked if there is one thing I could share about the Konso to the rest of the world - what would he want other people to know about his community. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ His answer was simple and straightforward. Please share our photographs and information on the internet. That way people can research and learn about our community. Please include on the website where we are and how to visit us so they can come and learn something new! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Instagram might not want me to share these stories. But they need to be heard. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ __ #everydayafrica #ethiopia #culturetrip #voyaged #living_destinations #thisisafrica #natgeohumanity

☀️🐚 after a week of trekking through the backroads of ethiopia, i decided to escape to the beach! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ my plan was to go to zanzibar, tanzania but @nibbytravels suggested the coast of kenya instead! diani beach mombasa is right on the indian ocean, with less crowds and more chill. if you had to choose between a more popular touristy island or a more rugged authentic beach town. where would you go? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ __ #kenya🇰🇪 #travelkenya #visitkenya #travelandleisure #gltlove #beautifuldestinations

I have to take a minute and genuinely thank all of you. I don’t want to sound cheesy or cliché but I really have to. I know most of you follow me from my adventures in Guate and I was always nervous that as I discover other places or take a different approach to this platform, I might lose some connections.

I am never looking for "followers" but I also put a lot of pressure on myself and don’t want to let anyone down. This has been one of the hardest times of my life and I feel less alone knowing how much support I have from you all on this online community.

Your support allowed me to just turn off and trust that when I come back, you’ll still be there. Using the @headspace app has really changed my life. I didn’t know where to begin to quiet my mind, realign my purpose or just be. It took me a while to learn how to disconnect and I had to really focus to break these habits. But I feel like the app was designed for people like me! Sending me gentle reminders daily was what actually helped me get in a groove.

After about three months, I can finally say that I found my rhythm with meditating and have built new mindful habits! Thanks for your messages, thanks for your comments, thanks for just being here with me.

Un abrazo!

🇬🇹 gotta take a min and show some love for gautemala! don’t worry... i didn’t forget about everyone. i will be back in november. i am gonna take a minute to talk about vaccines. for guatemala, i never got any vaccines. and never got sick. besides your regular ‘’montezuma's revenge’ 😅 stomach stuff in the beginning. now i have a stomach of steel tbh. for africa, i just got the required yellow fever. i actually had it documented from july 2009 when it was required for me to go from ecuador to costa rica. it’s suppose to last 10 years. so please cross your fingers 🤞🏽 they let me in even tho i’m a few months past 10 years. the newer vaccines last longer i believe. i do plan to get my hands on some malaria pills for emergency. they can help treat malaria IF i feel the first symptoms coming on. my reasoning for ignoring the other ‘suggested’ vaccines? i dont know.... a feeling? my gut? i heard everything and anything from you guys. i seriously got SO MANY messages and useful info when i asked for help. some told me they were gravely ill in africa and highly recommend ALL vaccines. then, many people told me they got sick even with the proper vaccines. and a handful told me vaccines are poison and terrible for your immune system. i resonate with all of them! so in the end. it’s your decision. your body. your responsibility. i have a lot of natural supplements with me and will be conscious of my condition throughout my travels. sooo... what are your thoughts? am I gonna be okay? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ __ #LivingAbroad #travelguatemala #travelafrica #lakeatitlan #prettylittleiiinspo #beautifuldestinations #nostalgicmoments #lovelysquares

🇪🇹🌍 today i discovered all of addis ababa. i learned a few key amharic words, ate the traditional dish mahberawi, and drove to the highest peak on the entoto mountains to overlook the entire city. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ i've actually had a migraine 🤯since i arrived and today @nibbytravels told me that addis sits at 7,700 ft [2355 m] above sea level. and this picture was taken at more like 10,000 ft. even when i travel to guatemala, i have a bad reaction to the altitude. and thats just barely reaching 5,000 ft. enough about elevation. 💁🏼‍♀️ addis is a bustling city, an epicenter for the entire african continent and incredibly safe. you can walk around most areas without worry of much danger. like any city, petty theft can be an issue. but there is not much violent crime to ever worry about. i walked back to my hotel alone at dusk and felt completely safe. 🙌🏽 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ __ #addisababa #chasingafrica_ #africa #loveafrica #discoverafrica #visitafrica #exploreafrica #ethiopia🇪🇹

unknowingly, this trip of self discovery turned into an origin trip. my parents did a dna test with @23andme and i didnt think much of it when my mom sent the results to us in july. it was pretty much what i knew already: 99.9% northwestern european. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ the breakdown with highest percentage was 43% irish/british and 27% german/french/dutch. the rest is a mix of other broadly western european countries, scandanavian and 2.7% ashkenazi jewish. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ my family has been in the NY/NJ area for 6 generations or so and we can trace them all back, arriving to ellis island when it opened in the late 1800s. [don't get me started on open borders now!] ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ but none of this dna stuff really dawned on me until i was in amsterdam. i actually never planned on ever visiting. i went for a work assignment. but i ended up having this weird de ja vu feeling the entire time!... even tho i had never been there. i genuinely felt my ancestors sending me signs. like this rainbow that followed me around. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ and now it all links together with why i wanted to go to ethiopia in the first place. we as a human race can trace all of our ancestors back to origin. africa. and more specifically ethiopia. some of the oldest fossils explaining human evolution can be found in ethiopia. i am fascinated with the study of human races, origins, societies, and cultures. which is why ethiopia has been on the top of my list. and NOW i'm finally here! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ amsterdam was just a cool middle story, that ended up linking my entire journey. from my family’s ancestral homeland to our entire species homeland! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ stay tuned for more from addis ababa! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ __ #gramthedam #meetyourgenes #travelhistorian #madeinholland #ultimatetraveltales #theculturetrip

⚡️ my heart is in so many places right now. i read this quote and it’s keeping me sane for the moment. 🖤

don’t be so smart you can't wonder.
don’t be so set on your sunny days that you can't love the roll of the thunder.

goedenavond ✨ from one of the most ‘instagramable’ spots in amsterdam! it’s not hard to find, not even that crowded, and actually as beautiful in real life as it is in pictures. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ i walk by this area each day. i sat on a bench right behind where I’m standing for an hour. just watching the canal boats, tourists and people pass by. they say most locals don’t come to this area. but as a tourist, i love it! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ i am in awe of this city. and actually glad i already booked my ticket to ethiopia or i might never leave. who just added amsterdam to their bucket list? sign me up 🙋🏼‍♀️cause i’m def coming back. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ __ pc: @jeffreylinla #traveltherenext #LetsGoEverywhere #travellingaroundtheworld #amstergram #visitamsterdam #awesomeamsterdam

🚲🌸 i forgot how much i love exploring a new city. seriously, what an amazing feeling it’s been hearing a new language and seeing new architecture. i’ve been comfortable for too long and i am so grateful for this adventure. it’s challenging but much more so rewarding. tell me the truth. are you stuck in your comfort zone? i was and didn’t even realize. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ __ #gramthedam #roamtheplanet #igersamsterdam #netherlands #wonderlust #sheisnotlost

❤️ happy weekend everyone! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ i head to ethiopia mañana! ... with NO real plan yet 😬 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ i booked an airport hotel to begin. i need some time to just decompress a little. then i was recommended an @airbnb in the capital city addis ababa with a dutch woman and her ethiopian husband! i will try and stay with them until i make a plan to see more of the tribes, culture and rural lifestyle. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ not sure if i will get many recommendations here. but if you know anyone or heard of anything i must see in ethiopia. let me know in the comments. if not, just wish me well! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ __ #gramthedam #femmetravel #ladiesgoneglobal #timeoutsociety #travelinladies #thankyouamsterdam #thetravelwomen #loveamsterdam

🙏🏽⛪️ i visited some of the most sacred places in all of ethiopia. one being the holy trinity cathedral which houses the tombs of haile selassie and his wife. this is considered one of the most important places of worship in the entire country. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ i could go on and on about the sights, but it’s not as interesting as the overarching themes that kept coming up. ✨ ethiopia is an extremely proud country. they are arguably the ONLY country in africa to NOT be colonized. many european countries tried, but failed. italy occupied the land but never colonized. this means that ethiopia maintains a lot of their original culture. they have their own calendar, sense of time and over 80 languages. while ethiopia is ranked amongst the top 25 poorest countries in the world, they are rich in culture and history. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ✈️ i’ll head out with @nibbytravels to visit the omo valley, home to many of these ethnic groups. in the mean time, swipe 👉🏽🎥 to see a cute video with kids and more from around addis. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ __ #visitafrica #ethiopia #addisababa #travelafrica #exploreafrica #stayinspired #exploreeverything

🌿 @hobbitenango is one of my favorite places in guatemala. they do such a good job of building sustainability right into the core of their operations. i mean, they're a full-on #zerowaste establishment and they help protect honey bees with @beehubgt and assisted in replanting hundreds of trees in the surrounding area. i really hope i can find similar hotels, projects and orgs in eastern africa. 🦋 as you all know, i’ve been taking some personal time. a large part of this is getting back to my original self. knowing who i am and what i love as an individual is such an important part of this next journey. i am constantly evolving and am a different person today than i was yesterday. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ i started using the @headspace app last month to give myself some more of that “me” time. to just listen to my thoughts, get grounded and find time to nurture my soul. to be honest, it’s been difficult. i am always on the go and want to stay as productive as possible. it’s hard to just stop. that’s why i’ve been starting small, just a 3-minute daily meditation on the app. and, i am not hard on myself. sometimes it’s in the morning. somethings it’s in the evening. whenever i can fit it in. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ any words of encouragement from others who already meditate? or even those who want to start? i could use some help creating this new meditation habit and really making it stick . . . ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ __ #headspace @headspace #ad #mindfulliving #consciousblogger #consciousliving #holisticwellness #sidewalkerdaily #makemoments

✨ I woke up today and am not chasing my dreams. I woke up today and decided to let my dreams chase me!

At this very moment, I don’t know exactly what I want to do. And it’s really not as easy as listening to some inspirational quote say ‘follow your dreams’ when you don’t know what that one thing is you are after.

So without any pressure, I will continue on my path. Helping others. Creating small joys. Finding success in all shapes and sizes.

This is a reminder that if you wake up every day and are not sure what you want to do. Or who you want to be. That’s ok! You don’t need to chase that one specific picture labeled as ‘a dream’ that everyone else is chasing. Just keep creating value in the world and you will attract what is yours!

            🌻🇬🇹 the question . . . WHY GUATEMALA? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
i seriously get this question a lot. and i answer it almost every day in dms. sure, the "how" i got here is also important. but the "why" i chose to stay for 8 years is the real focus.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
to me its simple. . . . the people.

seriously. i don't hike volcanos and i'm not obsessed with tortillas. sure i like them both just fine. but it is the demeanor and attitude of the people i work with. a striking balance between humble and proud. tough and polite. curious and reserved. the pureness of their hearts and determination in their souls. i do not know how else to put it.

i feel welcomed, loved, appreciated and safe.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
sure, guatemala is not perfect. far from it. but the communities that i have had the privilege to connect with have impressed me and instilled a strong sense of hope for the future. they have showed me what perseverance really looks like. i am forever thankful for that perspective and encouragement. and i truly believe there is retribution ahead for such people who have long-awaited a better situation with such a positive attitude.

to every guatemalan. . . 🙏🏽✨ thank you for letting me live in your country and work with your people. i am forever grateful.

me: nope, he's my biological dog.

seriously tho. do you believe in the strange phenomenon that owners actually look like their dogs? 💁🏼‍♀️🐕✨ welp, i'm here to show you that ixi and i are living proof.

gosh i miss him. but don't worry he has really good babysitters back in guatemala and i'll be home before he knows it. to be fair, he gets equally distraught when i run to the tienda for like 30 seconds without bringing him.

do you think he can tell a big difference between 1 week and 1 month a part? 😭💔 what about 2 months?
