🌊✨ i have TWO very specific "resolutions" for 2020. one is more abstract and deeply rooted in my own bliss. and the other is related to the happiness of others. the first will go like this . . . ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ask yourself: where am I? answer: here. ask yourself: what time is it? answer: now. i recognized how privileged i am to even be in a position to say the above. which is why my other goal is much more concrete. i promise from the depths of my soul i will get involved in the border crisis. i cannot sit and watch families continue to be held in ‘for-profit’ detention centers and treated like animals. no más. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ especially this time of the year... as we all celebrate time with our loved ones. all i can think about is the fact that there are 50,000+ people at the southern border separated from their families. i'm not sure in what form this will manifest. but i'm putting it out into the universe and open to anyone who knows the best way to help. #keepfamiliestogether

I have to take a minute and genuinely thank all of you. I don’t want to sound cheesy or cliché but I really have to. I know most of you follow me from my adventures in Guate and I was always nervous that as I discover other places or take a different approach to this platform, I might lose some connections. I am never looking for "followers" but I also put a lot of pressure on myself and don’t want to let anyone down. This has been one of the hardest times of my life and I feel less alone knowing how much support I have from you all on this online community. Your support allowed me to just turn off and trust that when I come back, you’ll still be there. Using the @headspace app has really changed my life. I didn’t know where to begin to quiet my mind, realign my purpose or just be. It took me a while to learn how to disconnect and I had to really focus to break these habits. But I feel like the app was designed for people like me! Sending me gentle reminders daily was what actually helped me get in a groove. After about three months, I can finally say that I found my rhythm with meditating and have built new mindful habits! Thanks for your messages, thanks for your comments, thanks for just being here with me. Un abrazo! __ #amsterdam #meettheworld #ad #headspace @headspace #adventureseeker

☀️🐚 after a week of trekking through the backroads of ethiopia, i decided to escape to the beach! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ my plan was to go to zanzibar, tanzania but @nibbytravels suggested the coast of kenya instead! diani beach mombasa is right on the indian ocean, with less crowds and more chill. if you had to choose between a more popular touristy island or a more rugged authentic beach town. where would you go? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ __ #kenya🇰🇪 #travelkenya #visitkenya #travelandleisure #gltlove #beautifuldestinations

📍turmi, ethiopia. this was captured towards the end of my omo valley trip. one of the few "staged" photos that i was able to execute. not because it was difficult, but because i had to find that creative energy within me to do it. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ every day in the omo valley was exhausting. not just from driving hours and hours to try and find nomadic tribes. but from the emotional exhaustion of it all. how can i genuinely express to each indigenous group my desire to learn, embrace and appreciate their traditions. and how do i not put my lens, judgement or standards on polygamy, female circumcision or other rituals. there are so many factors that come into play when discussing cultural preservation, especially in ethiopia. and i have so much more to share. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ my first blog is up! it is just my travel guide and itinerary 🙌🏽[link in bio]. my next blog post discussing the more difficult topics is almost ready, i just need a little more time to fine tune it. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ __ #sheisnotlost #neverstopexploring #girlswhotravel #allaboutadventures #spiritoflife #ethiopia #omovalley pc: @nibbytravels 🌿

Thanks to @nibbytravels I had the opportunity to meet The King of the Konso tribe. It was a rainy afternoon and Nibby drove thru all types of terrain to get me there. I entered the King's compound and waited. A few minutes later Kaala (king) Gezahegne Woldu greeted me with a huge smile, firm handshake and nearly perfect English. Kaala Gezahegne serves in the highest leadership position as The King of the 300,000 Konso people. He graduated with a degree in engineering and was working outside of his community when his father passed away and he was called to take over the reign. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ We sat in his visiting area and he attended to my endless questions gracefully. I asked about technology, education, cultural preservation, tourist, photography, everything! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ His answers all circled around the same theme. Balance. As someone who left his village to study, worked a full-time job in the city and has international experience - he said he wants people from his village to maintain their culture, language and lifestyle. And preservation is important. But, he understands if they want to leave and experience a more modern lifestyle. His hope is that people will do both. Live part of the time in a city to study and work. And part of the time back at home maintaining their traditions and raising a family. Our conversation went on and on for at least an hour. And I decided to record my last question. I asked if there is one thing I could share about the Konso to the rest of the world - what would he want other people to know about his community. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ His answer was simple and straightforward. Please share our photographs and information on the internet. That way people can research and learn about our community. Please include on the website where we are and how to visit us so they can come and learn something new! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Instagram might not want me to share these stories. But they need to be heard. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ __ #everydayafrica #ethiopia #culturetrip #voyaged #living_destinations #thisisafrica #natgeohumanity

🌿 Gonna keep toning it down so they don’t delete my account. They already removed some of my creative account collaboration features 🙄 so I can’t work with other brands and they blocked any hashtags I use as punishment. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ But I do appreciate all the comments and DMs recognizing how much other ‘inappropriate’ overtly sexual content is rolling around with ZERO consequences. Anyway... 💁🏼‍♀️ I really want to share some other stories from my travels! Especially this one from the Dorze village. When I got to the Dorze village, one of the first things my local guide showed me was his family home. The homes here are completely woven using bamboo and false banana tree fiber. The Dorze are well-known weavers and use that skill in creating textiles and building their compounds. The inside of each home is divided into sections, includes a fire pit and even a pen for their livestock! 🐷🐣 Yes, the animals sleep inside with them for warmth. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ My guide explained that the homes are built so high, to account for all the termites. Instead of trying to get rid of the termites, the locals adjusted their lifestyle to accommodate them. The houses can be built 20 feet high anticipating the termites to eat away at the base. Over the years, the homes will shrink lower and lower. When it gets too small for the entire family to fit - it will transition to just a kitchen or storage room. And around this time the children might be getting married or move out. And they will build the next large structure as needed. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This was one of the first villages I visited and also one of the explanations that really stuck with me. I really appreciate how people in this region live in harmony with nature and care for their animals. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ They appreciate nature so much that even their homes deliberately resemble the head of a large wild animal. 👉🏽 Can you guess which animal that is? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ __ #exploreafrica #nowdiscovering #backpackwithme #dorzevillage #traveltagged #triptocommunity

❤️ you don't need to speak the same language to communicate. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ in the omo valley, your wealth is determined by how many cattle you have. but i was more impressed by the sense of styles and accessories, especially of the arbore tribe. young girls and women decorate themselves in colorful beads and jewelry. just like anywhere else, to make them feel more attractive! and i could not help myself. i was fawning over her style and she knew it. i learned that most of the colorful beadwork and jewelry actually comes in from kenya and women go to the market to shop. if you swipe, you can get a closer look at her rings. these are made locally from scrap metal or even bullet casings. i purchased a few from her and wear them every day! __ #everydayafrica #ethiopia #journeyofgirls #culturetrip ph: @nibbytravels

🌺 i really wanted to show off some of the rings i got in ethiopia! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ the gold ring i purchased at the turmi market and it’s made from a bullet casing. the others are crafted from random scrap metals. sometimes telephone wires, car parts or even other jewelry. the large coil i bought during my visit to the arbore tribe. from the woman in my recent post. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ __ pc: @finding.jules #777luckyfish #featuremeseas #hvmansouls #artofvisuals #l0tsabraids #justgoshoot

🌻🇬🇹 the question . . . WHY GUATEMALA? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ i seriously get this question a lot. and i answer it almost every day in dms. sure, the "how" i got here is also important. but the "why" i chose to stay for 8 years is the real focus. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ to me its simple. . . . the people. seriously. i don't hike volcanos and i'm not obsessed with tortillas. sure i like them both just fine. but it is the demeanor and attitude of the people i work with. a striking balance between humble and proud. tough and polite. curious and reserved. the pureness of their hearts and determination in their souls. i do not know how else to put it. i feel welcomed, loved, appreciated and safe. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ sure, guatemala is not perfect. far from it. but the communities that i have had the privilege to connect with have impressed me and instilled a strong sense of hope for the future. they have showed me what perseverance really looks like. i am forever thankful for that perspective and encouragement. and i truly believe there is retribution ahead for such people who have long-awaited a better situation with such a positive attitude. to every guatemalan. . . 🙏🏽✨ thank you for letting me live in your country and work with your people. i am forever grateful. __ #explorandoguatemala #visitguatemala #perhapsyouneedalittleguatemala #guatemaya #centroamerica #antiguaguatemala

✨ sometimes the most efficient thing we can do is take a break. there have been a lot of shifts lately, to say the least. and i really needed to take space to find the balance of it all. that's why i took some time to leave guatemala [☀️just for a few months] and gain a fresh perspective and get back to my creative self. i am sooo used to dealing with high pressure situations and stress, but lately life has been a tad overwhelming. so i actually downloaded a new app called @headspace to help me get into a meditation routine. 🧘🏼‍♀️⚡️they have guided meditations and the app assists you in not turning off your mind but to calmly let your thoughts in without being overwhelmed. i think it will really help me on the next phase of my journey. do any of you meditate? 🙏🏽💫 i am just getting back into it and would love to hear any of your mindful experiences. __ #quietinthewild #WomenCreate #feelthefeelings #headspace #ad #captureconfidence #empoweredwomen

✨ I woke up today and am not chasing my dreams. I woke up today and decided to let my dreams chase me! At this very moment, I don’t know exactly what I want to do. And it’s really not as easy as listening to some inspirational quote say ‘follow your dreams’ when you don’t know what that one thing is you are after. So without any pressure, I will continue on my path. Helping others. Creating small joys. Finding success in all shapes and sizes. This is a reminder that if you wake up every day and are not sure what you want to do. Or who you want to be. That’s ok! You don’t need to chase that one specific picture labeled as ‘a dream’ that everyone else is chasing. Just keep creating value in the world and you will attract what is yours! __ pc: @nehemiassancoy @lushatitlan #explorandoguatemala #greenhotel #ecohotel #iamatraveler #beautifulhotels #beautifuldestinations #tlpicks #forbestravelguide #bestplacestogo

i made it back to jersey just in time for the final moments of summer. 🌻 did you know that heather and i drove 1.5 hours to some farm in east bumblef*ck to take pictures in a gigantic sunflower field. and it was closed. so we had to turn around and drive back. then we found out it was open the next day. who closes an entire sunflower field in the middle of summer? ⚡️anyhoo. this is the best i got for the gram. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ __ #makeyousmilestyle #lovelulus #chasingsummer #lulusambassador #livecolorfully #prettylittletrips

🌿 X I B A L B A ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ we had the best experience making our own jewelry in antigua and i never got to tell you all about it! many of you know antigua as the best place to eat, drink and hangout with friends. but taking an afternoon to learn more about traditional jade and actually make your own jewelry was better than it all. swipe to see some more pics from that girls day and link in bio to read más. __ pc: @jacie.smeltzer | @xibalbajoyas #ThingsToDoInAntigua #Guatemala #losrinconesdemiguate #prettylittletrips #journeyofgirls

stranger: did you adopt your dog? me: nope, he's my biological dog. seriously tho. do you believe in the strange phenomenon that owners actually look like their dogs? 💁🏼‍♀️🐕✨ welp, i'm here to show you that ixi and i are living proof. gosh i miss him. but don't worry he has really good babysitters back in guatemala and i'll be home before he knows it. to be fair, he gets equally distraught when i run to the tienda for like 30 seconds without bringing him. do you think he can tell a big difference between 1 week and 1 month a part? 😭💔 what about 2 months? __ pc: @patadechucho_ @panasurf_atitlan #lakeatitlan #meandmydog #girlaroundworld #agirlandherdog #bffgoals #furmom #furbaby #dogmomlife

I’ve always been an open book with all of you and that’s why you decided to stick around and follow me for so long. Instagram is my space to be creative and build a positive community. So for the past few months when I found it hard to be positive I didn’t know how to use this platform anymore. I’ve been vague and distant. And the truth is I haven’t been ready to talk about it. And the depths of my relationship are more complex than words can describe. You know that. That’s why many of you are here. Because you found solace in my complicated, multicultural relationship. Well it turns out it was just that. Too complicated. And our culture clashes could not be resolved. To be honest with you. I feel like I failed. As a voice advocating for diversity and embracing differences. We just could not make it. And that’s all I’m ready to share. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Thank you for always showing me kindness and support. And for being patient with me as I take time to regain my confidence to engage with you all in an honest and positive way again. 💛

🌊🐚 the cure for anything is salt water. sweat, tears, or the sea. in my case, i needed all three . . . ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ being vulnerable on this platform is a weird thing. cause i don’t need the attention. i don’t want your pity. i just want you to know that you’re not alone. and no one’s life is perfect. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ __ 🥼 @lulus #posttheordinary #lovelulus #lulusambassador #gifted #makeyousmilestyle

🌻 now that I’ve seen some NJ sunflowers [these count] i must be on my way. i am heading to London next week. then I have 6 weeks of the unknown. having no restrictions and a world to see is somewhat paralyzing. i want to get away and i can go anywhere. that in itself is overwhelming. in a good way. in the best way. i’m picturing ethiopia, uganda, kenya or somewhere similar where i can go and gain a new perspective. maybe help tell a story that needs to be told. then i am picturing some self care on a beach where i can be anonymous. but the canvas in front of me is blank. and i can fill it up however i want. any thoughtful projects or responsible travel opportunities come to mind? if you know of anything or anyone. please tag them below. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ __ #pasteloftheday #consciousliving #morningslikethese #mujeresviajeras #sunflowers🌻

🌿 @hobbitenango is one of my favorite places in guatemala. they do such a good job of building sustainability right into the core of their operations. i mean, they're a full-on #zerowaste establishment and they help protect honey bees with @beehubgt and assisted in replanting hundreds of trees in the surrounding area. i really hope i can find similar hotels, projects and orgs in eastern africa. 🦋💦 the unknown. i am really enjoying being in this moment of the unknown. i'm not gonna to lie to you. its scary. but that doesn't mean i can't enjoy the feeling of being scared. i have a lot of people counting on me back in guatemala. and i need to find my own strength to continue keeping the promises i made to our artisan partners and their families. i know a lot of you are confused and asking if i am ever going back to guatemala. ☀️ happy friday everyone! i felt some strong energy shifts yesterday and googled to find out what was up with the moon. sure enough it's actually friday the 13th and a full harvest moon. and i can feel it. i was a little "out of whack" and could not wrap my head around all the vaccinations. i'm still deciding and will update my stories with more info on that . . . in the meantime i want to leave you with something that truly resonates with me. especially during this time of really needing to access my intuition. what you are not changing ✨ you are choosing ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ read that again. __ #fullmoonritual #borntotravel #tropicalvibes #beachlife #jerseyshore #newbeginnings #moonvibes #goodvibesonly

🖤 muy buenos días!!! i’m packing and organizing for london all day today. heading out mañana already. it’s definitely a challenge trying to pack for a city, then also random places i’m gonna travel to after that i don’t even know where they are yet. i gotta fit my blazers for work, then some sundresses for a beach and then some mosquito repellent and safari hats. i know that making sustainable choices in fashion is challenging. that’s why taking care of your go-to pieces is so important. here’s a swipe 👉🏽 with some of my fave accessories that will 100% make it in my suitcase. pieces that i buy once and make last. if you’ve read this far 🙃 i have 15% off coupons for both the watch [ALYSSAYA] and headphones [ALYSSAYA15] __ #coffeeshopvibes #parisiennestyle #prettylittleiiinspo #morningslikethese

✈️ on a dif kind of road trip now. this one to the jersey shore was just as important as the one i’m on now to london. i continue to grow and learn every day. never stagnant. and days when i don’t want to get out of bed or be productive or i cry. are still days of growth. mistakes are lessons. in the end. just keep going at your own pace. we can all be a better version of ourselves. not all days are easy. not all moments are perfect. and that’s ok. thank you for your honest messages. each one gives me energy to keep going. 💪🏽✨ we got this! __ #roadtrip #mindfulliving #GirlGang #beauthentic #stayinspired #exploreeverything #liveintentionally #pursueyourpassion
